Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 18-05 –  September 16, 2018

Shooting, Ypsilanti Township – Off  Campus

Location: Vila Drive, Arbor Homes, Ypsilanti Township (Just north of  campus)

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Vila Drive at approximately 9:42 p.m. The victim (Non EMU Student) suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was shot in the parking lot of the housing complex and was treated at a local hospital. The suspect fled the area and is unknown at this time.

Armed Robbery, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: 900 block of Washtenaw Avenue, East of Oakwood Street, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at a business in the 900 block of Washtenaw Avenue at approximately  12:00 a.m.  It was reported that a suspect entered the business, produced a weapon and demanded money. The suspect fled the area on foot. The suspect is unknown at this time.

Multiple Home Invasion and Robberies over the last 30 days , City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: Neighborhood south of Campus, City of Ypsilanti

Over the past 30 days, the Ypsilanti Police Department has responded to the report of approximately 30 home invasion, and 5 robberies in the neighborhood south of the main EMU Campus. The suspect(s) are unknown at this time.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 18-02 – June 1, 2018

Home Invasion and Motor Vehicle Theft, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: 400 block of West Forest Avenue., East of Ballard Street, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of a home invasion at the 400 block of West Forest Avenue at approximately 8:30 a.m. It was reported that sometime between midnight and 7:30 a.m. a suspect entered the home through an open window and stole several items while inside. The victim’s keys and vehicle were also stolen. The suspect(s) are unknown at this time.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 18-01 – January 12, 2018

Reported Crime: Homicide, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: 700 block of Green Rd., West of LeForge Rd, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the 700 block of Green Rd at approximately 11:20 p.m. on January 11, 2018. Two or three unknown suspects entered an apartment and shot two victims. The suspects then fled the area. Both victims are non-students. One victim is deceased, the other is in critical condition. Several items were stolen.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1: Unknown male, late teens to early 20’s, 5’11”, thin build.

Suspect 2: Unknown male, late teens to early 20’s, 5’11”, thin build.

Suspect 3: Unknown male, late teens to early 20’s, 5’11”, thin build.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 17-05 – December 2, 2017

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery, City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: 500 block of Emmet St., between Perrin St. and Ballard St., City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 500 block of Emmet St. at approximately 5:10 a.m., December 2, 2017. Two unknown suspects entered a home and robbed the occupants at gunpoint. The suspects then fled the area. Both EMU students and non-students were present. No injuries were reported. Several stolen items were later recovered.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1: White male, 20’s, 5’8”, muscular build, “scruffy” goatee, wearing a black North Face coat and a flannel shirt.

Suspect 2: Black male, 20’s, 6’0”, thin build, “scruffy” goatee, wearing a maroon hooded sweatshirt.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 17-04 – October 29, 2017 (Corrected from #17-05)

Reported Crime:  Felonious Assault – Off Campus

Location: Near Intersection of Washtenaw and Ballard, City of Ypsilanti

 The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to notification from St. Joseph Hospital to take a report of a felonious assault that occurred in the area of Washtenaw Avenue & Ballard Street @ approximately 2 a.m., October 29, 2017. A 19 year-old female EMU student told police she was assaulted by a suspect at knife-point for personal items as she was returning home.  The suspect fled the area on foot.  The victim sustained injuries to her hand and received treatment.

The suspect is described as follows:

Suspect: White male, five foot, 11 inches, 40-50 years of age, no facial hair, possibly armed with a small pocket knife, wearing a dark hoodie, dark jeans or possibly sweat pants, appearing to be under the influence of some type of narcotic.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 17-03 – October 28, 2017 (Corrected from #17-04)

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault – City of Ypsilanti-Off Campus

Location: 100 Block of North Summit Street, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of a felonious assault in the 100 block of North Summit Street , at approximately 4:25 a.m. , October 28, 2017. A non EMU student reported while walking with his girlfriend that he was approached by three males, who began a verbal and physical altercation with him.  The victim said he was punched, and that he wrestled with one suspect on the ground before fighting them off. The victim said one suspect then fired a single shot from a handgun in the direction of the reporting person before all three suspects fled South on Summit Street. There were no injuries reported.

The investigation of this incident has resulted in the identification of the suspects involved in this crime. The suspects have all been identified as non-EMU students. All of the suspects are juveniles. The Washtenaw County Prosecutor has been involved in the investigation with the EMU Police Department. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.

Timely Warning 17-01 – September 10, 2017

Reported Crime:  Shots Fired

Location: Outside Sellers Hall near East Circle Drive

On September 10, 2017 at approximately 1:30 a.m. the Eastern Michigan University Police Department responded to the area of Sellers Hall for a report of a fight that had broken out and a suspect shot from a handgun into the air. Everyone fled from the scene of the fight, with no injuries reported at this time.

The suspect who fired the shots into the air is described as a dark skinned African American male with longer, Afro-style hair and under the age of 18. The suspect was last seen wearing a black shirt and grey sweatpants.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 17-02 – July 30, 2017

Reported Crime:  Robbery – Off Campus

Location: 500 block of W. Cross St., City of Ypsilanti on July 30, 2017, at approximately  8 p.m. , the Ypsilanti Police Department advised they were investigating a robbery that occurred in the area of Cross Street and Ballard Street.  The victim suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is being treated at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

The suspect is described as an African American male 18-22 years of age, average height and build.  The suspect was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and tan shorts.  The suspect, who was armed with a handgun, fled the scene on foot.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 17-01 – June 22, 2017

Reported Crime: Homicide – Off Campus

Location: 300 block of W. Cross St., City of Ypsilanti

On June 20, 2017, the Ypsilanti Police Department was advised of a possible homicide suspect that may be residing within city limits as a result of a Detroit Police investigation into the death of a 29-year old woman. The victim was found on June 18, 2017 in a vehicle that was driven by her boyfriend, Demetrius Montgomery. 

 On June 21, 2017, Ypsilanti Police discovered the potential crime scene in the couple’s Ypsilanti apartment in the 300 block of W. Cross St.

 Mr. Montgomery is wanted for questioning in his girlfriend’s death.
