Internships

The Political Science Department at EMU offers an internship or practicum for undergraduate majors in political science, public administration, international affairs, public law and government, and public safety administration, as well as for students majoring in other fields who have an interest in a political or administrative placement. Internships are also offered for graduate students in the Master of Public Administration Program.

Most students enroll in three to six credit hours of internship, which combines 10 to 20 hours per week of academic-related work experience, a faculty-intern seminar, and a journal and self-evaluation by the student intern. From three to 12 credit hours in political science may be available, depending on the amount of time spent on the job. A three-credit internship normally involves 150 hours working at an organization during a semester. Although students normally complete their internships during a single semester, some have their internship commitments extended to two or more semesters.

In order for their internship to count for academic credit, students must meet with Dr. Shu Wang prior to starting their internship. For information on the student internship fund for 2023-24, please visit the awards page.
