Student Organizations

Our students have the opportunity to participate in these department-sponsored organizations:

Pi Sigma Alpha

Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, was founded in 1920 for purposes of bringing together university and college students and faculty members who share an interest in government and politics. It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and currently has chapters at nearly 800 campuses. The EMU chapter, Zeta Tau, typically hosts lectures and other events that are of interest to students and faculty in the Political Science Department and to a broader campus audience.

Public Administration Club

The Public Administration Club is designed to introduce students to opportunities in the fields of government and nonprofit administration.  Students gain insight on the status of the discipline, job opportunities, professional development, tools for success, the significance of networking and other pertinent issues impacting citizens and public administrators who serve at the forefront addressing problems at the local, state, and federal levels of government.

The following three academic teams are open to all EMU students:

Mock Trial

Since 2002, Eastern Michigan University students have competed in trial simulations against teams from other universities throughout the United States. Students learn the mock trial game and its application to the real world under the tutelage of faculty, former mockers and EMU graduates who have gone on to law school and successful legal careers. As a result, students are given the opportunity to meet, network and work closely with lawyers and judges from the local community.

Model United Nations (UN)

Model UN promotes awareness of international issues, and also instills an appreciation of the critical role of the United Nations in peacefully resolving conflicts and forging collective responses to global problems. EMU involvement dates to the 1970s, when students organized a Model UN conference through the Great Lakes Invitational Conference Association.

Moot Court

Eastern Michigan first participated in American Moot Court Association competitions in 2013 and was recognized as the "14th Best Program in the Country" after only three years. Approximately 450 teams from college and universities across the U.S. compete in regional and national competitions in which students simulate appellate court proceedings.
