Celebrating Juneteenth! - June 19, 2025
Dear Eastern Michigan University Community,
Today, we commemorate Juneteenth -- a profound celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their freedom. This day has since become a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work still ahead to create a society built on equity and inclusion.
At Eastern Michigan University, we proudly embrace our diverse, welcoming, and supportive community. We strive to foster an environment where every voice is heard, valued, and empowered. Juneteenth is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the strength of those who came before us and to reaffirm our commitment to justice, learning, and unity.
Two campus events are taking place today to celebrate Juneteenth:
- The EMU Center of Race & Ethnicity and Campus Life are hosting “Juneteenth Freedom Day” from noon to 2 p.m. The event offers in-person and online participation. The in-person event will take place in the Student Center, Room 300. It includes lunch. Those wishing to attend online must register in advance to receive the Zoom link.
- The EMU Department of Africology and African American Studies is hosting “The Future of Black Politics in America: A Juneteenth Panel Discussion.” The event will take place from 3 – 5 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 310A, and is LBC approved. RSVP here.
As we celebrate, let us honor this history and continue our efforts to build a future rooted in compassion and understanding. I encourage each of you to take a moment today to learn, engage, and recognize the significance of Juneteenth -- whether through campus events, thoughtful conversations, or personal reflection.
Together, we can ensure Eastern Michigan University remains a place where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is championed, and the legacy of Juneteenth inspires us all.
