Introducing NEW Title IX Coordinator, Dr. Melody Werner

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Eastern Michigan University is committed to an environment in which every member of the EMU community has a right to work and learn in a welcoming and safe environment that is free from sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and assault.

We would like to introduce our campus community to Dr. Melody Werner, Eastern Michigan University’s Title IX Coordinator. In her role, Melody has the primary responsibility to oversee the University’s educational and prevention initiatives, as well as the University’s response to reports and complaints that involve possible sex discrimination, to monitor outcomes, identify and address any patterns, and assess effects on the campus climate so that EMU can address issues that affect the wider University community.

Prior to her serving as the Title IX Coordinator, Melody worked in the EMU Athletics Department serving as the Associate Director for Compliance and as Senior Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator. She served as the Interim Athletics Director in 2014. Melody earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from EMU.

Please welcome back Melody to the EMU community.

Dr. Melody Werner can be reached in person in 370 Student Center, by telephone at 734.487.3617 or by email at

The University’s sexual harassment and non-discrimination policies can be found here:

3.1.8. Sexual Harassment and Other Prohibited Conduct
3.1.2. Equal Employment Opportunity / Affirmative Action
3.1.3. Civil Rights

These policies define harassment and discrimination, and provide helpful examples.

If you have a question or concern about discrimination, sexual harassment or sexual assault on campus, please consult with Melody Werner or refer to the University’s Title IX resource website. The page contains instructions for reporting your concerns. It also contains procedures for investigating complaints of discrimination, harassment or assault that are made against faculty, staff, or visitors.

Please familiarize yourself with these resources. All EMU personnel must understand the required reporting responsibilities and help to create an environment where all members of the EMU community feel welcome, valued, and able to work and learn in an environment free from discrimination.
