Teaching as a Second Career
Master of Arts in Teaching
Ever thought about becoming a teacher? You may already have a degree and a career, but may be now is the time for a change. If so, a career as a middle or high school education teacher (grades 6–12) may be for you. The demand for teachers in science, mathematics and world languages is increasing faster than most education positions. Job prospects are excellent and many schools report problems finding certified science, math and world language teachers.
A second career as a teacher can be accomplished at Eastern Michigan University through our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. Our program features concentrations in biology, chemistry, integrated science, mathematics and physics or physical science and world languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish). While these concentrations were developed for those with a degree in a closely-aligned field, we'll work with you to develop a program of study if you don't have the requisite degree.
High Quality, Personally Focused
At Eastern, your classes are primarily taught by full-time faculty and are small in size. If you have a degree in the concentration field, then the program can be completed in 1.5 to 2 years. However, if more time is needed, the program allows part-time enrollment until reaching the student teaching semester which is full-time, during the day for 15 weeks. All classes in most of our MATS are offered online or in the evenings making the program both convenient and personal.
The College of Education and its departments offer many scholarships to students in our programs.
