Master of Public Administration
Equip yourself to serve with a master's in public administration from Eastern Michigan University. Prepare for a career in the public sector or nonprofit administration through interdisciplinary study. Our approach focuses on applied public administration, integrity, public service, democratic principles, professionalism, equality and diversity. You’ll boost your communication, analytical and leadership skills as well as your talents in decision-making, program management and finances.
Choose a concentration in local government management or nonprofit management or customize your own concentration. You’ll need to complete 39–42 credit hours to earn your MPA. Take your courses on main campus in Ypsilanti or at EMU’s conveniently-located Livonia site.

A career in public administration gives you the opportunity to influence major decisions affecting society. Public sector careers could include government service, community management or work in the nonprofit sector. You may find work at the local, state or federal level developing policies or overseeing agencies. In the private sector, graduates work in human resources, law or become consultants. The MPA is a versatile degree preparing you for leadership in many fields.
- 3.0 overall GPA or 3.25 in the last half of undergraduate program
- A 250-word description of your academic and professional history and professional goals in public administration.
- One political science course in the fundamentals of American government, public law, state and local government or public administration, with a C or better if taken as a part of a bachelor’s degree or a B- or better if taken after.
- Meet admission requirements for the Graduate School.
