Sean Gray was appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in December of 2024 to an eight-year term that will expire in December 2032.
Gray’s journey into leadership began in his family’s small business environment, where he developed a passion for entrepreneurship early on. Gray went on to become a two- time EMU graduate, graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in educational leadership. During his time at EMU, Gray served as Student Body President and played a key role in selecting the site and design for EMU’s Student Center. His leadership and advocacy
were key in presenting the project to both the State Legislature and the Board of Regents for approval.
Gray currently serves as the vice president of small business services at the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC), a non-profit that plays a central role in Detroit’s business retention, attraction, and economic development efforts. His work at DEGC includes facilitating small business engagement, with notable contributions such as supporting minority-owned businesses in the 2024 National Football League Draft held in Detroit.
Gray is also actively involved in several community organization. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Historical Society. Additionally, he is part of the Advisory Committee for Invest Detroit, a mission-driven financial institution dedicated to advancing equity, investment, and wealth generation. Regent Gray currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee, as well as a member of the Personnel and Compensation Committee and the Audit Committee.
