Apply for Housing: Current Information

The 2022-2023 Housing application process for current residents, new transfers, commuters looking to move on-campus, and all graduate-level students reopened for late applicants on Monday, March 21, at 10 a.m and closes Friday, June 24, at 5 p.m Students are able to apply, make a prepayment, and secure a space from the remaining spaces available on campus.

Please be advised that we are on a wait-list for all singles in the Village, Hoyt, Pittman, Brown, Munson, and Cornell Courts. 

EMU will continue to require students who live on campus to be fully vaccinated and to have received one booster shot for the upcoming academic year (2022-2023). The University requires housing residents to be vaccinated because the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective in reducing the spread and health impact of COVID-19, which is particularly important in congregate housing settings where many people live in close proximity.  For more information about how to report your vaccine status, request an accommodation, or receive the COVID-19 vaccine, please visit our EMU Safe website.

2022/2023 Housing & Dining Rates

Priority Phase Basics:

  • I currently live in Apartments or Village A or B. What do I need to do to keep my space?

    Eligible students are able to renew eligible bed spaces during the priority phase only.

    If you currently live in Brown, Munson, Cornell, Village A house, or Village B house and want to keep your same space for 2022-2023, you MUST apply, make your prepayment, and renew your current bed space within the housing application prior to March 7 at 5 p.m.


    Please note that not all spaces in these areas are available for renewal. If your current space is not available, you will be prompted with this message within the application.

    After March 7 at 5 p.m., students lose their priority to renew their current bed space. The space will become available for another student to secure during room selection. Given demand, we will not hold or save a space for any student who misses the priority deadline. It is the student's responsibility to meet the posted deadline and complete the application process if they want to renew their space.

    Please be advised that all double suites in Brown and apartments located at 601 West Forest are not eligible for renewal, as preference is given to confirmed groups of four students. 

  • I live elsewhere on campus, why can't I renew?

    Given the Welcome Home 2025 announcement, Housing must reconfigure most areas of campus to accomodate the new renovations that are planned. Pittman, Hoyt, Village C, VIllage D, Village E, Village F,  Sellers, Phelps, Wise, Buell, and Best are being "reset" to meet demand. Students will be able to select spaces in these areas during Room Selection, provided the student meets the eligibility criteria.

    Downing, Walton, and Putnam will be closed for the 2022-2023 year for renovations.

    Westview will closed for construction beginning May 2022. The new Westview Apartments will open in Fall 2024. 

  • I missed the priority deadline. Now what?

    If you are unable to apply and make your prepayment during the priority phase, you will not be able to renew your space or be able to participate in our Room Selection lottery. 

    Students also lose the ability to form groups with other students after the priority phase ends. If you have others you'd like to live with, you will have to coordinate with them to find housing together. 

    The application process will reopen for late applicants on Monday, March 21, at 10 a.m. At this time, students will be able to apply, make a prepayment, and secure a space from the remaining spaces available on campus.

  • $150 Housing Prepayment

    All students, regardless of scholarship/financial aid status, are required to submit a non-refundable $150 prepayment at the start of the housing application. This prepayment cannot be waived or charged to the student account.

    The housing application accepts credit cards and debit cards provided they also function as a credit card. The system will not accept debit only cards or prepaid credit cards.

    Making the prepayment via the housing application gives students instant access to proceed. If a student chooses to mail their prepayment, they MUST follow the directions to do so listed within the housing application. Mailed prepayments will take significant time to process, as EMU staff is still largely remote and will cause a delay in being able to proceed with the application.

  • 2022-2023 Upper-class Housing Options

    Please find below a comphrensive list of upper-class housing options for the 2022-2023 year:

    Hoyt - Single two person suites (1 student per bedroom) and four person double suites (2 students per bedroom). This hall will remain open during University breaks.

    Pittman - Single two person suites (1 student per bedroom) and four person double suites (2 students per bedroom). This hall will remain open during University breaks.

    Village A & B - Single four person suites (1 student per bedroom). These buildings will remain open during University breaks.

    Village C, D, E, & F - Seven person suites consisting of three double rooms and one single room (2 students per double room, 1 student per single room). These buildings will remain open during University breaks.

    Sellers - Four person double suites (2 students per bedroom). This hall will close for all University breaks.

    Wise - Two person double suites (2 students per bedroom). This hall will close for all University breaks.

    Buell - Four person double suites (2 students per bedroom). This hall will remain open during University breaks.

    Best - Four person double suites (2 students per bedroom). Students must be in the Honors College to select this location. This hall will close for all University breaks.

    Brown, Munson, Cornell, and 601 - a variety of single (1 student per apartment) and double (2 students per apartment) options. Please refer to the individual complex pages for housing options. These areas will remain open during University breaks.

    Due to four buildings/areas being closed for renovations, we will NOT offer converted singles in any location. We anticipate using every bed available to meet demand.

  • University Apartment Eligibility & Availability

    To be eligible for any of our apartment options for the 2022–2023 academic year, students must reach the age of 20 by 12/31/2022 and have attempted at least 55 credit hours at the time of application. 

    Our apartment options sell-out very fast (about 8 hours!). If you are interested in an apartment, you MUST apply and submit your prepayment during the priority phase to even have a chance of securing an apartment. 

    Once apartments are sold-out, we maintain a wait-list for serious applicants only. Students must have an active application AND prepayment on file in order to be placed on the wait-list. You can email us at [email protected] to inquire about the waitlist.

    Students need to be flexible and understand that the majority of our cancellations come in during the month of August.

    We highly recommend that students who are unable to select a space in apartments pick an alternative space on campus so that they have housing secured; we can switch assignments later if/when a space becomes available. 

  • Village Residence Hall Availability

    Once spaces in the Village are sold-out, we maintain a wait-list for serious applicants only. Students must have an active application AND prepayment on file in order to be placed on the wait-list. You can email us at [email protected] to inquire about the waitlist.

Priority Phase How-Tos:

  • How do I renew my space?

    Eligible students are able to renew eligible bed spaces during the priority phase only.

    If you currently live in Brown, Munson, Cornell, Village A house, or Village B house and want to keep your same space for 2022-2023, you MUST apply, make your prepayment, and renew your current bed space within the housing application prior to March 7 at 5 p.m.

    Please note that not all spaces in these areas are available for renewal. If your current space is not available, you will be prompted with this message within the application. 

    Within the housing application, you will need to work through all pages of the application until you reach the page titled "Room Renewal". If your space is available for renewal, you will be given the option to renew the space. By clicking on "Renew This Space", you will be taken through a series of pages that requires you to assign yourself to the space. You must continue through the rest of the application (by completing the meal plan and GradGuard pages) to verify your renewal was successful. 

    The page titled "Assignment Information" is the last page of the application, and serves as a confirmation and summary of all items you selected in your application. It also displays room occupancy information and contact information for your roommate and/or suite-mates, if applicable.

  • How do I form a group?

    Students who form a verified group will be assigned the same lottery time for room selection. Forming a group allows the Group Leader to assign all members of the group to a bed space during room selection.

    First, once students determine who they want to live with, all students need to discuss where they want to live and who will be responsible for picking the room. The person who will pick the room and book group members into bed spaces is called the Group Leader.

    Student need to discuss which of member will be the Group Leader. The Group Leader is responsible for making the group in the application, adding the other student(s), verifying the group once all members have been added, and booking the bed spaces for all group members.

    Do NOT create a group until you have found who you want to live with. At that point, whoever is going to be the Group Leader invites students to join them, automatically creating a group in the system. Creating a group early, or when you are still searching for a roommate/suite-mate, or when you are not going to be the Group Leader will result in errors. If you accidentally make a group, please use the "Delete Group" to remove the group from your record.

    Once you reach the "Group up with Roommates/Suitemates" page in the housing application, you MUST follow these steps to successfully create a verified group:

    (1) Click on “Search for Specific Roommate” from the links listed in the upper right of the group information.

    (2) Enter your group members LEGAL first and/or last name into the text boxes. If you enter a nickname or have the spelling wrong, you won’t be able to find the other student. Click on “Search” once you have entered the required information.

    (3) As long as the information you entered is correct AND the other student is not a member of another group, you will see the student as an option to add to your group. Click on “Add to Group” to add the person to your group. This action sends an email the other student, telling them that they have a request to join. This also auto-creates a group for you.

    (4) Repeat this last step to request more people to your group, if desired.

    (5) After requesting other students to join you, the application will refresh to the “Group up with Roommates/Suite-mates” page. You will see the outgoing request(s) you just made. Please note that requests expire in 7 days. The other student(s) has 7 days to accept or deny your request.

    If they deny your request, you will get an email stating this. If they deny your request, delete your group and restart the process to find a roommate. If the request expires and you haven’t heard from the potential roommate/suite-mate, delete your group and restart the process to find a roommate. If they approve your request, you will get an email prompting you to return to the application to verify your group.

    DO NOT VERIFY YOUR GROUP UNTIL ALL INVITED MEMBERS HAVE ACCEPTED YOUR REQUEST.

    (6) Once all invited members have accepted your request, the Group Leader needs to log back into the application and click on the “Verify Group” button.

    (7) Once your group is verified, a notification will display at the bottom of the page. At this point, you are ready to proceed to room selection. This will take place at your assigned lottery date and time.

    Please note that you will not be able to move past the "Group up with Roommates/Suitemates" page in the application until AFTER the priority phase has closed and your lottery date and time arrives.

  • Group Member Roles & Required Actions

    The Group Leader is responsible for making the group in the application, adding the other student(s), verifying the group once all members have been added, and booking the bed spaces for all group members.

    All other persons in the group are Group Members. All group members must log in and complete their personal applications after the Group Leader makes bed assignments for the group. Group Members must log in and complete their application by Sunday, March 20 at 11:55 pm.

  • I'm not renewing or not forming a group. What do I do?

    When you reach the "Group up with Roommates/Suitemates" page in the housing application, you should log out of your housing application. Do not create a group of one, as it will cause an error during room selection. If you accidentally make a group, please use the "Delete Group" to remove the group from your record.

    Please note that you will not be able to move past the "Group up with Roommates/Suitemates" page in the application until AFTER the priority phase has closed and your lottery date and time arrives.

Room Selection Lottery Information:

  • How are lottery dates and times assigned?

    Once the application closes, we make a list of all students who applied, submitted their prepayment, and did not renew their space. Only these students are eligible to move into room selection via the lottery.

    First, everyone that is currently living in 601 West Forest, Brown, Munson, and Cornell are pulled out and given a lottery time for day one of room selection. We give preference to students who are already living in one of our apartments to pick a space in that same area.

    Second, we take the remaining eligible students and group them first by class standing (PhD Students, MA students, Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and First-Year), and second by the total number of credit hours earned. For students in groups, the individual data listed above is averaged out using all members.

    Lottery days and times are then assigned from the top of this list to the bottom. 

  • When is the Room Selection lottery? How are dates and times be assigned? How am I notified?

    Once the priority application closes on Monday, March 7, at 5 p.m., we can start the process of assigning lottery times and notifying students.

    We anticipate sending lottery notification emails to eligible students on Thursday, March 10. If you do not receive a lottery notification email by noon on Friday, March 11, and you feel you should have been assigned a lottery time, you need to reach out to [email protected] immediately. 

    Lottery emails are sent to the active email address and the personal email address you have on file with Housing. Make sure to verify/update your personal email address during the application process to ensure you recieve this important communication.

    Room Selection will take place starting Tuesday, March 15, and run through Thursday, March 17. Eligible students will be assigned a lottery date and time during this timeframe.

  • How do I verify that I secured a room assignment during room selection?

    After you secure a room, you must continue through the remaining pages of the application to verify your room assignment.

    The page titled "Assignment Information" is the last page of the application, and serves as a confirmation and summary of all items you selected in your application. It also displays room occupancy information and contact information for your roommate and/or suite-mates.

  • What if I miss or am busy during my scheduled lottery time?

    If you cannot log in at your assigned lottery time, the process remains open to you from your assigned time until Sunday, March 20 at 11:55 pm. Given this lengthy duration, we will not change assigned lottery times. 

    You can log in anytime after your assigned lottery time to pick your space and complete the application.

    We HIGHLY recommend that you pick your space and complete your application prior to Sunday, March 20 at 11:55 pm. As of Monday, March 21, the application process reopens for late applicants and you will no longer have priority over other students to select a space.

  • Room Selection Tips

    On the ‘Upper-Class Room Selection’ page, select your building choice by clicking the green “Select This Location” button.

    The next page will show you all of the available spaces in that particular area. You can further filter the building using the “room type filter” or “floor/building filter”.

    If you are looking to place yourself in an Learning Living/Theme Community, you must have selected that LLTC earlier in the application. If you did not select that particular LLTC on the application, you will not have access to the floor. You can always go back and update this as needed.

    Be very careful when selecting a room. Read the description of the room carefully and learn about who is already assigned into the space by clicking on “Show Room Info”. Read the profile of the student BEFORE selecting the room.

    If you don't see a particular building, area, or room type, that means it is SOLD OUT.

    When searching the apartments, be sure to know if you are selecting a furnished or an unfurnished apartment. Brown/Munson and 601 are all furnished. Cornell has a mix of furnished and unfurnished units. F at the end of the room description means it is furnished. U means that it is unfurnished.

    The system allows you 10 minutes to complete this process. If you run out of time, you are able to go back in and start over.

Application Access

  • Students cannot access the housing application if they have a hold on their student account. Once holds are removed from a student's account, they take one business day to update in our system.
  • Please log-into our online application portal using your emich user name and password. You will also have to dual-authenticate with DUO in order to enter the application.
  • Students must use Firefox, Chrome, or Safari; Internet Explorer is not compatible with our system.
  • Make sure to clear your cache prior to logging into the application. You should do this each time to log in to ensure proper performance.
