What is the Housing Portal?
The portal is the site that a student signs into to access the housing application. You will need your username and password to be able to access the application portal.
When will the housing application be available for the 2018-19 academic year?
Tuesday, March 1, 2018 starting at 10:00am.
What can I do to prepare for the application process before it starts?
A $150 prepayment will be needed. The prepayment is applied to your fall semester housing costs, and cannot be waived. You will want to review and familiarize yourself with the contract terms and conditions,that you will be agreeing to (so do READ it!).
Should I have a parent/guardian help me with this process?
As is the case for most new students, this is the first time that you will be signing a legal document. While you should be the one answering the questions on the application, we strongly encourage you to have your parent or legal guardian read over the contract that you are going to be signing.
What if I have not yet turned 18 years of age?
A parent will need to co-sign the contract if you are not yet 18. Print off a copy of the contract with your signature and signature of a parent or legal guardian and download it back into the application. Once we confirm receipt, you will be able to complete the rest of the application.
Will I be able to complete the contract if I do not make the prepayment?
No. You will not be able to proceed with the application until payment is made. Please be sure to have a credit card ready when you start the application.
How does the application process work?
The Freshman Application is a 3 Step process. In Step 1, you will make the $150 prepayment, agree to the terms of the contract, and complete the Personal Profile. Step 2 will be available starting May 1 and end on June 15. During this step you will go back into the application portal and participate in the roommate search process or request a roommate of your choosing. Step 3 begins June 25 when you will be able to go back into the application portal during your scheduled timeslot to select your hall, room, and meal plan.
How do I request a friend to be my roommate?
You will include the name of your friend on your application during Step 2. They will need to request you on their application. You will need to confirm each other as roommates. Both students need to apply and make the $150 prepayment at or about the same time.
What if I do not have a particular roommate in mind?
Once you have completed the Personal Profile in Part 1, you will be able to do a Roommate Search during Part 2. The system will give you names of students and the percentage of compatibility that they might have with your lifestyle. You can then make contact with those that you feel would make a good roommate and decide who would make a good roommate match.
What happens during Step 3?
Step 3 will begin June 25. Depending on your pre-designated timeslot, you will be able to go back into the portal to select your hall, room, and meal plan. Timeslots for those who apply by June 15 will be emailed around June 22 to your EMU email account.
What happens if I am not available during or miss my timeslot?
You can go back into the application portal to select a space any time AFTER the assigned timeslot.
How are timeslots assigned?
Any student who completes the application by June 15, 2018 will receive a lottery number determined by the date that they applied and made the prepayment. Your timeslot will be emailed to you via your EMU email account. Be sure that you have activated your EMU email account so that you receive that information.
Can I select suitemates?
You will not be able to request suitemates on the application. .
Will I have a room to myself if I do not select a roommate?
No. In designated double rooms, the open space will be available to anyone looking for a space. The Housing & Residence Life Office also reserves the right to consolidate the room assignment of any student who places themselves into an open double room without a roommate. If consolidation is necessary, you will remain in the hall which you selected and will be notified of your new assignment at a later date. For this reason we highly encourage students to search for a roommate utilizing the Roommate Search option to ensure compatibility.
Can I select a single room?
We do not offer single rooms to new incoming freshmen. If later in the semester, space is available to accommodate a single, a freshman would have the option to move to a single room at that time.
Do I have to have a meal plan?
Yes, all freshmen are required to have a meal plan.
What if I need a hall that stays open during breaks?
Many of the halls on campus close during scheduled university breaks. If you need to remain on campus during those break times be sure to select a hall that remains open. Hoyt and Pittman both remain open.
TIP: If you do not select a hall that remains open, you will need to find somewhere to stay during scheduled breaks. We do not offer temporary housing during those times.
