Carmen McCallum, Faculty Liaison

Dr. Carmen M. McCallum is an Assistant Professor at Eastern Michigan University. She has previously served as an Assistant Professor at Buffalo State, SUNY  and as an Academic Research Specialist for the Provost Office of Undergraduate Education at Michigan State University. Dr. McCallum completed doctoral study at the University of Michigan’s Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. Her undergraduate degree is in sociology from the University of Michigan and her master’s degree is in social work from Wayne State University.

Previously, Dr. McCallum served as an academic advisor and lecturer at various institutions, where she worked with different academic departments to provide academic advising, course instruction, and mentoring to graduate and undergraduate students throughout their academic careers. Dr. McCallum’s research interests include access and retention within graduate education; African American students and faculty; programmatic assessment and evaluation; graduate students’ mentoring experiences.

She is particularly interested in understanding how race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status influence students’ graduate school experiences. Her work has been published in the Journal of College Student Development, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Readings on Equal Education and About Campus. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation to support her study of graduate education.

E. Abby Davis, Project Coordinator 

Abby is a two-time Eastern Michigan University alumna having earned a bachelor’s degree in
Business Management and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership/Student Affairs. She previously held a position with EMU Upward Bound where she helped students from Ypsilanti Community High
School prepare for college. She is passionate about providing underrepresented students with the
knowledge and resources they need to earn their degree and becoming thriving, fulfilled
members of society.
