Welcome Letter: EMU Student Body President
To my fellow students,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 academic year! If this is your first year at EMU and the first time you have explored the Student Handbook, consider it a map to the crazy, tumultuous, stressful, comedic, tragic, invigorating, rewarding, and yes, fun, road that is the Eastern experience. If you’ve been traveling down the road for some time, I hope you find what you are looking for.
The Student Handbook is designed to answer as many questions that you may have about the ins and outs of EMU as possible, and serve as a headquarters for connecting you to staff and resources that are here to help.
As much as the college experience can feel like being thrown into a pool in an effort to teach you how to swim, there are swim instructors here if you know where to look - and lifeguards if you need them. Spend some time looking at the list of Campus Resources , both Academic and Non-Academic. While imposter syndrome abounds in a college environment, I strongly encourage you not to worry about whether you “need” a specific resource, or whether it is “for you.” These services exist for us, the students, and the generous-hearted people that work here want you to take advantage of them.
Just like with everything else in college, ask questions, try things out, and go for it. Just know that you don’t need to go it alone. Between the information and resources in this Handbook, friends, faculty mentors, your Student Representatives (visit us in Student Center 342!) and more, the EMU Community’s mission is to make sure you have what you need to succeed. With that, I have no doubt that you will!
