More information

What is the Undergraduate Symposium?

The undergraduate symposium is a collection of research or creative projects including:

  • Research projects in the humanities, social sciences, and natural/physical sciences
  • Performances
  • Design-based projects

It is an opportunity for participating EMU students to share the results of their research and creative academic activities. Work may be by single or multiple authors (no more than four authors per presentation).

Students may present in one of the following conference formats:

  • Virtual oral presentations (live or prerecorded): authors are allotted 15 minutes to present their work and will be organized into one of the four sessions throughout the day.
  • Virtual poster presentations (live or prerecorded):  there are three poster sessions, each of which is 1 hour and 30 minutes. The sessions provide the audience an opportunity to connect with student researchers.
  • Crossing Lines Design Expo: a unique experience that demonstrates the outcomes of design-based projects in an virtual exhibit format. Students will be organized into one of four sessions throughout the day.

What is the Nomination Process?

  • It begins with faculty mentors and students collaborating on mentored research and creative projects.
  • Then it continues with an online submission, done by the student, that includes a max 700 character abstract. This must be edited and approved by the faculty mentor.
  • Lastly, the department/school's Symposium planning committee representative approves the completed abstract submission and then forwards it to the Event Chair.
