About the College of Education

Founded in 1849 as the first "normal school" west of the Alleghenies, Eastern Michigan University is one of the largest producers of educational personnel in the country.

The College of Education at EMU provides outstanding leadership in education. Our graduates are highly sought by school districts and other employers. Our alums have achieved many recognitions and positions of prominence.

The College offers a comprehensive range of programs—bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees (many with online and off-campus options)—and extensive non-degree and certification learning experiences. All professional education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). Many programs hold an additional national recognition.

College of Education Departments include teacher education, special education, and leadership & counseling.

EMU's College of Education is accessible, geographically, to a large population base; financially as a "good buy" for a quality education; and programmatically in terms of a large, diverse and "user-friendly" full-time teaching faculty with a wide range of expertise and experience.

The University also has been recognized for its commitment to campus diversity by U.S. News and World Report’s: America’s Best Colleges.
