I hold a Ph.D. in English, with graduate training that emphasized rhetoric, writing, and literacy studies. Here at EMU, I am an assistant professor in the Written Communication program and Associate Director of the First-Year Writing Program. Among my professional experience, I have served as a college writing program administrator as well as taught composition, literature, creative writing, literary nonfiction, journalism, professional communication, editing and publishing, and advanced writing courses on over a half-dozen campuses serving diverse student populations and institutional missions.
With this training and experience, some topics that I enjoy teaching, discussing, and writing about include composition theory and pedagogy, writing assessment, public policy discourse associated with contemporary higher education reform, writing program administration, writing across the curriculum, writing centers, basic writing, genre theory, the history of rhetoric and composition studies, rhetorical invention, rhetorical criticism, literary nonfiction and the essay, prose style, literacy and identity theory, and the transition between high school and college.
Presentations based on my research have been accepted to national and international academic conferences, including the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC); the Educause ELI conference; the International Conference on Language and Teaching, Kaoshiung, Taiwan (invited keynote address); the International Society for the History of Rhetoric (ISHR); the annual convention of the Modern Language Association (MLA); the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); the Penn State Conference on Rhetoric and Composition; the Promise of Reason Conference at the University of Oregon; the biannual convention of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA); and the Watson Conference at the University of Louisville.
Along with introductory writing and advanced composition courses at the undergraduate level, I teach graduate seminars in composition studies, pedagogy, and the theory and practice of basic writing. I also serve on campus-wide administrative committees for undergraduate retention and the assessment of student learning in general education.
