The Women’s and Gender Studies Department at Eastern Michigan University aspires to cultivate an interdisciplinary inclusive learning environment. We understand diversity in intersectional terms to include gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, ethnicity, religion, national origin, and other categories of belonging. As scholars, we examine how these categories of identity intersect in individual and social life. Our classrooms, research projects, and special events are all sites where we examine these processes and aim to be inclusive and welcoming of all people. We strive to support students who represent the full spectrum of identities because such diversity prepares students to be conscientious citizens of the world. We work to recruit and retain diverse and underrepresented people in both our undergraduate and graduate programs. We commit to addressing all forms of harassment as well as the perpetuation of stereotypes, misconceptions, and injustices.
