“If I could have a conversation with any donor who has given to EMU, that conversation would center around gratefulness,” said current rising senior, Anne Dominique Cruz, Class of 2023.
Anne is an international business major with a concentration in HR and Management. This summer she's focusing on finding internships that could help her grow into her professional career.
“The three main aspects that were captivating about EMU are community, opportunity, and financial support. Without the support of donors, I wouldn’t be here at EMU.”
Cruz is a part of the Filipino Culture Club, Kapamilya, while also competing on EMU’s nationally recognized Forensics Team. She joined the team as a first-year student, and after gaining national success, Cruz was able to receive scholarship funding for her competitive excellence with the Judy Sturgis Hill Forensics Endowed Scholarship and the Frederick B. McKay CMTA Scholarship. These scholarships have not only allowed Cruz to continue her success in forensics and the classroom, but also allowed her to rise above here at EMU.
“I don’t know how to put into words how much donor support means to students who get these scholarships. These scholarships allow myself more time to focus on school, instead of on work to pay for my education.”
The financial support donors provide students is truly making a difference and is helping students succeed in the classroom. When asked how receiving the Judy Sturgis Hill Forensics and the Frederick B. McKay CMTA Endowed Scholarships made an impact on her, Anne put it simply: “It makes me feel at ease with going to school and prioritizing my education first.”
Eastern Michigan University will “Give Rise” to students like Anne through the largest fundraising campaign in the school’s history. In March of 2021, the University launched the public phase of “Give Rise: The Campaign for Eastern Michigan University,” a $100 million comprehensive campaign to support student success, advance programs of distinction, and help students excel in and beyond the classroom.
