International Women’s Day: Message from Interim Chief Diversity Officer Doris Fields and President James Smith - March 8, 2022

To the Eastern Michigan University community:

As International Women’s Day draws to a close, please allow us to take this opportunity to salute and extend our appreciation for our campus community's ongoing commitment to making Eastern Michigan University a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment. We appreciate the dedication, care and commitment that each person takes to make our campus distinctive in this way. In particular, join us in celebrating International Women's Day, and the opportunity it provides to reflect on the contributions of women to our past achievements, current successes and future aspirations.

Eastern's newly appointed Interim Chief Diversity Officer Doris Fields has this to add about the importance of this day:

Happy International Women's Day! Today we celebrate women across the globe and their achievements. We must also acknowledge the social, economic and cultural barriers for women and make a commitment to continue fighting for gender equality. This is a key theme of this year's celebration. I encourage you to visit the International Women's Day website to learn more about efforts to create a gender equal world: To build better workplaces. Celebrate women forging change. Empower women's choices in health. And more. As the website states:

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.
