Welcome to the new academic year! - Aug. 26, 2024
Dear Eastern Michigan University community,
Welcome to the start of a new academic year! Whether you are a new student embarking on your educational journey, a returning student, or a member of our dedicated faculty and staff, I am thrilled to welcome you to a new academic year on our vibrant campus.
Fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone is our top priority. EMU is a place where diversity is celebrated, and every individual is valued. We are committed to ensuring that all members of our community feel respected and supported, regardless of their background, identity, or beliefs.
Campus renovation and transformation
The investment to transform our campus is already making a positive impact. As I greeted new students and families during move-in to the new Lakeview and Westview apartments last week, it was great to see their excitement as they entered the lobby areas and visited their apartments for the first time. It was a similar experience at Phelps and Sellers, which reopened after a year-long renovation project added air conditioning, and enhanced WiFi, among other improvements. This follows the renovations completed last year of Downing, Putnam and Walton. Campus housing has never been better!
Jones and Goddard residence halls are no longer standing. Part of the Welcome Home project included the demolition of older residence halls that were constructed in the 1950s and had outlived their usefulness. You’ll notice construction fencing around Brown and Munson – they are next for demolition. Both demolition sites will be reimagined to greenspace in a park-like setting.
The renovation work at Halle Library is nearly complete. Featuring new study and research space for students and recording studios for multimedia projects, an updated Academic Projects Center, a new gallery, and the relocation of the Civil Rights & Social Justice Center and the Center for Jewish Studies from other buildings on campus, it is expected to be completed in September. The library is open during renovation.
Mental health and overall well-being
The demands of academic life, combined with personal challenges, can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why the University offers a range of mental health resources to support you. Our Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office provides confidential counseling, workshops, and other resources to help you navigate any difficulties you may face.
Many measures are in place to ensure our campus remains a safe and secure place for everyone. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with our Department of Public Safety – and contact them if you have any concerns.
Civil discourse
In today’s complex world, it is more important than ever to engage in civil discourse. Our campus should be a space where ideas can be exchanged freely and respectfully. I encourage each of you to approach conversations with an open mind and a willingness to listen. By doing so, we can learn from one another and grow together as a community.
Everyone has the right to express their views, even when we may not agree with the positions being taken. It is through the respectful exchange of diverse perspectives that we can foster understanding and innovation. Let us strive to create an environment where all voices are heard and where we engage in meaningful dialogue.
To support this goal, please review our policies on free speech, speakers, and gatherings, which provide guidelines for respectful and open communication on campus:

The year ahead
This academic year will be filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and connection. Let us work together to create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone thrives. I look forward to seeing all that we will accomplish together.
Warm regards,
James Smith, Ph.D.
President, Eastern Michigan University
