Update to Timely Warning 14-04 April 3, 2014

Reported Crime: Attempted Unarmed Robbery – Rynearson Parking Lot on Hewitt Road– EMU Campus

Regarding the Timely Warning issued earlier this evening about an attempted unarmed robbery reported in the Rynearson Parking Lot, the victim has recanted her statement. No attempted unarmed robbery or assault of any kind occurred according to the victim.

 

Timely Warning 14-04 April 3, 2014

Reported Crime: Attempted Unarmed Robbery – Rynearson Parking Lot on Hewitt Road– EMU Campus

EMU Police are investigating a report of an attempted unarmed robbery that occurred at approximately 6 p.m. today Thursday, April 3 in the Rynearson Lot on the EMU Campus.

The victim, an EMU student, reports that she was walking on north side of the bus shelter in the parking lot when a male approached her from behind and then hit her in the back of the head and knocked her down. The victim said that the male then went through her backpack and fled on foot in an unknown direction. The victim reported that she was knocked unconscious briefly when she was hit. She was treated and released at a local hospital, with no reported injuries. The victim also advised that no property was taken.

The victim described the suspect as an African American male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a black coat and black knit hat.

Timely Warning 14-03 February 12, 2014

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault - Off Campus - City of Ypsilanti

Ypsilanti Police are investigating a report of a felonious assault that occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. today at the corner of Emmet Street and Normal Street, just south of the EMU Campus.

The victim, an EMU Student, reports that he was walking northbound on Normal Street and was approached by a vehicle occupied by three males near Emmet Street.  The passengers in the vehicle rolled down the windows and were making fun of the victim's pants. The victim exchanged words with the suspects and the rear seat passenger pointed a black/silver handgun at the victim. The victim ran away from the area and reported that the vehicle fled eastbound on Emmet Street. The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspects as African American males, in their early 20's, average heights, and thin builds. The front seat passenger was described as wearing a blue and yellow striped jacket. The subject with the handgun was wearing dark clothing. The vehicle involved was described as being a late 1990's or early 2000's black sedan with heavy front end damage and missing rear bumper.

Timely Warning: 14-02 February 9, 2014

Reported Crime: Unarmed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Sidewalk in the 700 block of North Congress Street, between Ballard Street and South Normal Street., which is located south of the EMU Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an unarmed robbery that occurred at approximately 3:03 a.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014.  The victim, an Eastern Michigan University student, said he was walking on the sidewalk when three males approached him and asked if he wanted to buy marijuana. The victim said he responded by saying, "No." The victim stated he was hit several times before the suspects fled on foot after taking his wallet from him. An EMU Police Officer attempted to stop the three subjects matching the descriptions below as they were walking south on Warner Street near Michigan Avenue. Two of the subjects ran off into a nearby apartment complex. The third subject was stopped, detained, positively identified, and subsequently arrested. The victim said that his wallet was taken. The victim reported abrasions, cuts and bruising to the face and was treated and released at the scene.

Suspect Descriptions:

1.    Suspect - 1: (Arrested) Black male about 6 feet, 4 inches tall, late teens to early twenties, wearing all black and a red hat.

2.     Suspect - 2: Black male about 5-7 to 5-9 tall, late teens to early twenties, wearing all black.

3.     Suspect - 3: Black male about 5-7 to 5-9 tall, late teens to early twenties, wearing all black.

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery- Off Campus - City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department is reporting that the fourth suspect is in custody related to the attempted carjacking/armed robbery on Congress Street near Summit Street on January 21.  Four suspects are now in custody related to this case.  None of the suspects are EMU students.  Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact D/Sgt Thomas Eberts at (734) 482-9878.

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery- City of Ypsilanti

Timely Warning 14-01, January 22, 2014

Reported Crime – Armed Robbery/Felonious Assault/Attempted Car Jacking

-City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location:  700 Block of Congress Street

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m., January 21st, in the 700 block of Congress Street near Summit Street, several blocks south of the Eastern Michigan University campus.  The victim, an Eastern Michigan University student, had just got in his car when four male suspects, two armed with semi-automatic handguns, confronted him.  One of the armed suspects (Suspect #1), struck the victim in the head with a handgun, and took his wallet.  The suspects also attempted to take the victim's car during the robbery.  The suspects were last seen fleeing the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

The victim was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries.

Suspect description:

1.   Black male, late teens to early 20s, wearing a white hoodie sweatshirt, armed with a handgun.

2.   Black male, late teens to early 20s, wearing a red & black jacket with the letter "R" on the chest, armed with a handgun.

3.   Back male, late teens to early 20s, wearing all dark clothing.

4.   White male, late teens to early 20s, wearing all dark clothing.

Timely Warning 13 - 18  December 3, 2013

Reported Crime - Unlawful discharge/Shots fired - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location:  1000 Block of LeForge Road

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a shots fired call that occurred in the area of LeForge Road and Railroad Street at approximately 1:40 a.m. on December 3, 2013.  The victim, an Eastern Michigan University Student, was in her apartment at the Peninsular Place complex when a projectile penetrated the outer wall of her apartment and struck her in the shoulder.  The victim was treated at an area hospital for her non-life threatening injury. The shot appears to have been discharged randomly up into the air from a location outside of the apartment complex and currently there is no suspect information available at this time.

Reported Crime: Homicide Investigation - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

November 25, 2013

On Sunday, Nov. 24, and Monday, Nov. 25, the Ypsilanti Police Department arrested two individuals in the death of Demarius Reed.

Ed Jemeal Thomas and a second subject are both facing murder and robbery charges in Reed's death. Thomas is facing charges of open murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The second subject, who has not yet been arraigned, faces charges of open murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, records show. Both subjects are in custody awaiting further court proceedings.

Update to Timely Warning 13-17 Issued November 12, 2013

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: 400 block of Emmet Street, between Ballard Street and North Hamilton Street, which is located southeast of the EMU Campus.

The suspects in this case have been taken into custody.  The suspects, a 22 year old male and a 21 year old male, both residents of  Ypsilanti Twp, were arrested this morning without incident in a neighboring jurisdiction, following a traffic stop.  They are presently in police custody awaiting arraignment.

Timely Warning 13-17  November 12, 2013

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Sidewalk in the 400 block of Emmet Street, between Ballard Street and North Hamilton Street, which is located southeast of the EMU Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 11:47 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2013.  The victim, who is not an Eastern Michigan University student, said he was walking on the sidewalk when the males approached him and demanded his belongings. The victim stated that one male pointed a black colored revolver at his face and he turned over the property he had in his possession. The subjects fled on foot and left the area in an unknown direction. The victim said that his wallet, cellular phone and a backpack were taken. The victim did not report any injuries.

Subject description: Two unknown African American males in their early twenties. The victim was able to describe one male as being 6' 2", thin build, and last seen wearing black hooded jacket, and dark pants. The other male was described as being 5'8" – 6', thin build, last seen wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt or jacket under a black Carhart jacket, dark pants, and armed with a black revolver.

Timely Warning 13-16 November 8, 2013

Reported Crime: Aggravated Assault - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Near the intersection of Perrin Street and Emmet Street, located just south of the Eastern Michigan University Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault that occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. today, November 8, 2013.  The two victims, who are not EMU students, were walking in the area when they observed the listed subjects near the described vehicle. The victims told police that a verbal altercation ensued and the subjects began to assault them. The victims reported they were punched and kicked in the body and head by the subjects. After the assault, the subjects left the area in the described vehicle. The victims were treated for minor injuries at the scene. They refused further treatment.

Subject description: Five male subjects – no other description provided.

Subject vehicle: Older model white pick-up truck with an extended cab.

Timely Warning 13-15 October 27, 2013 Armed Robbery Suspect

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

Location: 2100 block of Washtenaw Ave.

Ypsilanti City Police are investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 1 p.m. today at the Walgreens drug store, located at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hewitt Road.

The Ypsilanti Police indicate that the suspect approached the clerk and asked for change. He then produced a handgun and pointed it at the clerk. The suspect then emptied the cash drawer before fleeing on foot in an unknown direction. There are no reported injuries.

Witnesses described the suspect as an African American male, 5’ 9” tall, early 20’s, 150 pounds, medium build, beard, last seen wearing a “bomber” style dark jacket, a winter hat with a University of Michigan “M” logo on the front, and sunglasses. Timely Warning 13-14 October 22, 2013

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus.

Location: 835 Green Road near Leforge Ave.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a felonious assault that occurred at 835 Green Road, off Leforge Ave., at approximately 7:45 p.m. on October 21, 2013. The victim, an Eastern Michigan University Student, was in his apartment when he answered a knock at his door. When he opened the door he was struck in the face by a subject holding a handgun. The victim fought with the subject in the hallway. During the fight other suspects kicked in the front window of the apartment. The victim ran inside to check on his roommate and noticed the suspects fleeing the area. The victim suffered no major injuries and did not seek medical attention.

Subject description: Unknown African American males. The victim was able to describe one of males as being approximately 20 years of age, light complexion, approximately 5'10", short hair, and was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The victim was unable to provide any further descriptions.

Timely Warning 13-13  October 20, 2013

Reported Crime: Unarmed Robbery/Aggravated Assault - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Parking lot in the 400 block of West Michigan Avenue, near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Hamilton Street, located across the street from the Eastern Michigan University College of Business.

Subject description: 4 to 5 unknown African American males.  The victim was able to describe one of the males as being 19 – 20 years of age, medium complexion,  approximately 5' 11", medium to thin build, and last seen wearing a striped long sleeve shirt.  The victim was unable to provide any further descriptions.

Subject vehicle: Older silver or gray van – unknown make, model or year.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an unarmed robbery/aggravated assault that occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. today, October 20, 2013.  The victim, an Eastern Michigan University student, was walking in the parking lot behind Abe's Coney Island talking on his phone.  The victim stated that the male described above approached him and asked a question.  The male then punched the victim. The described occupants then exited the van and assaulted the victim.  The victim stated that he was punched and knocked to the ground by four or five males that had exited the van. The subjects reentered the van and left the area in an unknown direction.  The victim said that his wallet and cellular phone were taken during the assault. The victim was treated at an area hospital for injuries that were sustained in the assault.

This incident and the incident reported in Timely Warning 13 – 12 (aggravated assault near Leforge Rd. and Railroad St.) have similar suspect descriptions and involve a similar type vehicle.  Police are investigating both incidents and any possible connections.

Notice to Campus Community - October 19, 2013

Information from the Ypsilanti Police Department.

In reference to the Homicide Investigation that was reported on October 18, 2013.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is looking for information regarding the Demarius Reed homicide investigation. Investigators are looking for anyone that attended the "after party" on the night of October 17, 2013 through the morning of October 18, 2013. The location of the party was at 773 Green Road, Apartment 104, Ypsilanti, Michigan. This apartment is located in the University Green Apartment complex.

Timely Warning 13-12  October 19, 2013

Reported Crime: Aggravated Assault - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Parking lot of 950 Railroad, near the intersection of LeForge Rd and Huron River Drive, located just north of the Eastern Michigan University Campus.

Subject description: 5 to 6 unknown African American males – the victim was unable to provide any further description.

Subject vehicle: Older silver van – unknown make, model or year.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault that occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. today, October 19, 2013.  The victim, an Eastern Michigan University student, was walking in the Peninsular Place Apartment complex parking lot with a friend. The described vehicle was traveling in the parking lot. The victim stated that the van "clipped" the leg of his friend. Words were exchanged between the pedestrians and the occupants of the van. The victim's friend ran from the scene. The described occupants exited the vehicle and assaulted the victim. The victim stated that he was punched and knocked to the ground by five or six males that had exited the van. The subjects reentered the van and left the area in an unknown direction. The victim was treated at an area hospital for injuries that were sustained in the assault.

Update to Timely Warning 13-11  October 18, 2013

Eastern Michigan University has confirmed with the Ypsilanti Police Department that the victim involved in the homicide investigation reported in the timely warning earlier today is Eastern Michigan University student Demarius Reed. He is a student athlete on the football team. As was reported earlier, the incident happened off campus in the 700 block of West Clark Rd., near the intersection of LeForge Rd. and Clark Rd. It was discovered at 7:15 this morning. Ypsilanti Police are investigating the death and are in close contact with the EMU Police Department. The suspect in this case, Duane Lee, was arrested on Sunday, September 29, 2013, by the Ann Arbor Police Department.  He is presently in police custody awaiting arraignment.

Update to Timely Warning 13-10 issued on September 23, 2013 Armed Robbery Suspect

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Near the intersection of Summit Street and Sheridan Street, located one block south of the main campus and Washtenaw Avenue.

The Ypsilanti Police Department has identified the suspect wanted for the robbery reported in the Timely Warning issued September 23, 2013. The suspect has been identified as Duane Tyrone Lee. Further investigation by YPD shows that Lee is responsible for committing two other armed robberies that occurred in the City of Ypsilanti within the past week. In each robbery, the suspect produced a handgun and threatened to shoot the victim. Lee should be considered armed and dangerous.

It is believed that Lee is staying in the Ypsilanti / Ann Arbor area.

Lee is described as African American, 25 years of age, 6'2", 160 lbs, thin build and tear drop tattoos on his face.

Timely Warning 13-10  September 23, 2013

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

Location: Near the intersection of Summit Street and Sheridan Street, located one block south of the main campus and Washtenaw Avenue.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. today, September 23, 2013.  The incident took place near the intersection of Summit and Sheridan, in the City of Ypsilanti.  The victim, an Eastern Michigan University employee, was approached by the described suspect while on foot.  The suspect threatened the victim with a handgun and took the victim's cell phone and cash.  The victim was not injured.  The suspect then fled the scene on foot, heading westbound on Sheridan Street.

Suspect Description: African American Male, 25 years-old, 5'10", two tear drop tattoos on the left side of his face.  The suspect was last seen wearing a blue and black windbreaker, black jeans and black shoes.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

Location: 500 block of West Cross Street

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred in the 500 block of West Cross Street at approximately 3:58 p.m. today, September 11, 2013. An employee of a business reported a male walked into the store, then displayed a large handgun and demanded money from the victim. The victim turned over a small amount of money, then the suspect fled the area eastbound on Cross Street. A K-9 track was conducted but was unable to locate the suspect. The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspect as being an African American male in his mid to late twenties, 6'0"- 6'2", medium build with short dark hair and a clean shaven face, wearing a red shirt and dark shorts.

Timely Warning 13-08, September 3, 2013

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

Location:  800 Block of Green Road (north of main campus near Leforge Road).

The Ypsilanti Police Department reported today, September 3, that it is investigating an armed robbery that occurred in the 800 block of Green Road at approximately 9 pm tonight.  A female non-EMU student reported she was walking in the area when a male approached her, asked for a cigarette, and then produced a handgun.  The male took her cell phone and fled southeast from the area on foot.  The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspect as being an African American male in his twenties.  The suspect was described as being approximately 5' 4" tall, approximately 130 pounds and was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and black sweat pants.

Reported Crime:  Criminal Sexual Conduct I (Forcible Rape) - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

Location: Ballard Street and Emmet Street.

The Ypsilanti Police Department reported today, August 13, that it is investigating a CSC I that occurred near the intersection of Ballard Street and Emmet Street between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on July 30, 2013. A female, non-EMU student, reported she was walking in the area when a male approached her, asked to borrow her cellphone, and lured her behind a residence.

The victim described the suspect as being an African American male in his late twenties with a dark complexion. The suspect was described as being approximately 5' 11" to 6' tall, athletic build, shaved/bald head, no facial hair, and last seen wearing a dark t-shirt and long basketball style shorts.

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

Location: 1000 block of Huron River Drive, near Mayhew Street.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a felonious assault that occurred in the McDonald's parking lot on Huron River Drive at approximately 8:17 p.m. on July 29, 2013. An 18-year old male reported he was in the drive-thru at McDonald's when an older model burgundy colored Ford pick-up, extended cab, pulled up next to his vehicle, going the wrong way. The victim said the rear seat passenger, who is known to the victim, pointed a revolver at him in a threatening manner, but did not fire the weapon.

The victim said the vehicle left the parking lot and headed east toward Leforge Road.

The victim, who is not an EMU student, denied any injuries.

The victim stated there were four subjects in the vehicle. The suspect who brandished the weapon is described as a 17 year old Caucasian male. The driver, who is also known to the victim, is described as an 18 year old biracial male. The other two subjects in the vehicle were described as an 18-22 year old Caucasian female and an 18-22 year old African-American male.

Reported Crime: Unarmed Robbery - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

Location: Huron River Drive and Leforge Road.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an unarmed robbery that occurred near the intersection of Huron River Drive and Leforge Road at approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 9, 2013. A 41-year old male reported he was approached by three suspects and they asked him for money. The victim said that when he took out his wallet the suspects "jumped" him. The victim reported that he was knocked unconscious for several seconds and when he woke up he discovered his money and some personal property had been taken.

The victim, who is not an EMU student, was treated at an area hospital for bruising.

The victim stated that he was assaulted by three male suspects. The victim was unable to provide any further detailed description.

The Ypsilanti Police are investigating a report of an unarmed robbery that was reported to the department today.  The robbery took place on Sunday, April 28, at about 3 a.m. at the intersection of Washtenaw Avenue and College Place, in the City of Ypsilanti.  The victim reported that he was walking when struck from behind, knocked to the ground and then kicked and punched.  The victim reported that while on the ground, personal property was removed from his pockets.  The victim could not provide a detailed description of what he described as 3-5 attackers.  The victim, an EMU student, suffered minor injuries and is seeking medical attention today.

Location: Washtenaw Avenue and Cornell Road.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred near the intersection of Washtenaw Avenue and Cornell Road between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. on April 9, 2013. A female EMU student reported she was walking to campus when three males approached her and demanded money. One of the males was holding something by his leg that the victim believed to be some type of weapon. The victim reported she gave them what money she had, and the suspects fled in an unknown direction in an unknown make or model black vehicle. The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspects as being African American males in their twenties with dark complexions. The suspect that was believed to be armed was described as being approximately 5' 7", short hair, and last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect was described as being short, and last seen wearing a baseball style hat and a black hooded sweatshirt. The third suspect was described as being taller than the others, with a muscular build, and last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery – February 28, 2013

Location: EMU Bus stop – Saint Johns Street and Ann Street

This afternoon Tuesday, March 5, EMU Police were notified of an unconfirmed armed robbery that occurred on Thursday morning, February 28, 2013, at 1:30am. The investigation indicates the victim, an EMU student, was returning to campus when he was approached by two suspects who demanded his money and other personal items. One suspect revealed what the victim believed to be a hand gun. The victim gave the suspects his cell phone and other unspecified items. The suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction. The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspects as African American males, 5'6" to 5'8" tall, wearing black knit hats and dark puffy jackets.

Timely Warning to Campus Community- 13-01

Incident: Armed Robbery - January 18, 2013

Location: EMU Campus - Westview Apartments

An EMU student resident and his guests were leaving an apartment in the Westview complex, on the northwest side of campus, this morning at approximately 1:30 a.m. when they were approached by two suspects. The suspects implied they had a weapon, although it was not seen, and took jewelry, cell phones and clothing items from the victims. The suspects fled the area in an unknown direction. EMU police responded and the area was searched with the assistance of Ypsilanti Police. The suspects were not located. No injuries were reported.

The suspects were described by the victims as: 1) light skinned black male, 6 feet tall, thin build, wearing a dark hoodie sweat shirt and dark pants. 2) dark skinned black male, 6 feet tall, thin build, wearing dark clothing, a hoodie sweat shirt, and a dark knit cap. Additionally, one of the student resident's guests was involved in the incident as a third suspect.

The Ypsilanti Police Department has informed EMU that the off-campus death of the female student reported overnight is being investigated as an apparent homicide. The student has been identified as 23-year old Julia Catherine Niswender. The death occurred in an apartment in the 1000 block of Huron River Drive. The cause of death has not been determined. No information on a possible suspect has been determined.

Safety Notice – Off Campus, Ypsilanti Township - November 28, 2012

The Eastern Michigan University Police Department wants to make the University Community aware of an off campus assault that the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Neither the victim nor the suspect are students at Eastern Michigan University.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is attempting to locate Michael Joshua Glenn regarding an Attempted Murder that took place late Tuesday evening. The victim was brutally assaulted in the 2300 block of McKinley, off of Hewitt and Packard, in Ypsilanti Township. The victim is an acquaintance of Michael Glenn, and she sustained multiple injuries during the assault.

Glenn is described as a 21 year old African American male, 5'7 to 5'8, 180 to 200 pounds, who currently has a mustache and beard.

The Eastern Michigan University Police Department has had contact with Glenn in the past for his assaultive behavior. Glenn was issued a No Trespass order, barring him from the EMU campus. If Glenn is seen on campus, please call the EMU Police Department at (734) 487-1222 immediately.

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department reported a shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Emmet St. at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday morning. A male EMU Student was wounded in the ankle while attending a house party. A witness advised that during an argument, the suspect brandished a pistol and shot once at the ground.   The bullet ricocheted and grazed the victim on the ankle. The suspect then fled on foot in an unknown direction. The victim was treated for his injury and released from the hospital.

The victim described the suspect as being an African American male, dark complexion, approximately 5'10" - 6'0", 180lbs., wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Armed Robbery - 1200 block of Leforge Rd. (Off Campus- Ypsilanti Twp)

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office reported that an armed robbery occurred on November 3, 2012 at approximately 3:00 p.m. in the 1200 block of Leforge Rd.  The victim reported that he was walking on Leforge when he was approached by two suspects.  One of the suspects brandished a gun as the other went through his pockets stealing cash.  The suspects south fled on foot.  A K-9 track was conducted but the suspects were not located.

UPDATED INFORMATION

On 11/08/12, Detectives from the Ypsilanti Police Department working in conjunction with the Michigan State Police First District Fugitive Team arrested Jared Douglas Marks for the shooting that occurred in the 800 Blk. of Green Rd.on 11/04/12. The Ypsilanti Police Department had received information that Marks was in the Lansing area and he was located and arrested without incident coming out of a hotel in Lansing. A search warrant was executed on the hotel room and Detectives located what is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. Marks was transported back to the Ypsilanti Police Department for processing and questioning. He was later lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail and will be arraigned on 11/09/12. The victim remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.

Reported Crime:  Shooting - City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department reported a shooting that occurred in the 800 block of Green Rd. (off Leforge Rd.) at approximately 1:50 a.m. Sunday morning. A male (non-EMU Student) was shot while attending a party at an apartment. The victim advised suspect was armed with a revolver. The suspect then fled on foot in an unknown direction. The victim is being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Update to Timely Warning 12-16, November 3, 2012.

On November 2, 2012, a timely warning was issued regarding an armed robbery on the EMU Campus in the Green Lot 1 parking area, near Huron River Drive. The investigation of this case has revealed that the claim of an armed robbery on campus was a false report. This report will be forwarded to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's office for review and possible criminal charges. Eastern Michigan University will also be looking into seeking sanctions against the student for the false police report.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery – Green Lot 1

The EMU Police Department is investigating an Armed Robbery. The victim, an EMU student, reported that he was approached by four males in the EMU Green Lot 1 at approximately 6:28 p.m. Friday evening. The males approached the victim from behind as he was exiting his vehicle. One of the males was holding what the victim described as a black semi-automatic handgun. The males demanded the victim's money. The victim handed over his wallet, and then was punched in the face. The males took the victim's money and fled in a northeast direction. The victim reported a minor injury which did not require medical attention.

The victim described the suspects as being African American males in their twenties, all over 6'0", large build, wearing dark colored puffy jackets with hoods. The victim states two of the jackets had fur around the hoods. The victim also described one of the suspects as having a scruffy or scraggly beard.

Reported Crime:  Felonious Assault (Shot Fired) – 1275 S. Huron

The EMU Police Department is investigating a report of a felonious assault that occurred in the entrance drive to Eagle Crest Conference Center, Golf Course and Marriott Hotel (corrected location) at approximately 6:05 a.m. on July 18, 2012.  The victim is not an EMU student and reports that he was involved in a road rage incident near Huron River Dr. and S. Huron St.  The suspect followed the victim from S. Huron St. onto the drive into Eagle Crest and fired one shot at his vehicle, striking the rear bumper. The suspect fled in a white newer Mercedes SUV in an unknown direction.  The victim did not report any injuries.

Reported Crime: Burglary – Home Invasion (Occurred in the City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus)

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a burglary that occurred just after 11 p.m. on May 2, 2012, in the 400 block of Perrin Street.  The victim, an EMU student, noticed the suspect in his apartment carrying his roommate's laptop computer.  When the resident confronted the suspect, the suspect fled on foot.  The laptop was the only property stolen.

Reported Crime:  Arson

EMU Police are investigating a report of an arson that occurred at approximately 6:08 p.m. today in Wise Residence Hall. EMU Police Dispatch received a fire alarm indicating there was smoke in the building.

Officers responded and found the fire was started on a piece of paper on a bulletin board. Quick-thinking students put the fire out as they were exiting the building.

Reported Crime: Attempted Unarmed Robbery (Off Campus, City of Ypsilanti)

The Ypsilanti Police are investigating an attempted unarmed robbery that occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m. today , in the 300 block of Pearl Street. The victim is an EMU student and Open Carry advocate, who had his handgun in a holster. The victim reported that he was approached by an unknown suspect, who grabbed onto the gun and attempted to wrestle it away from the victim.  Another person came to the victim’s aid and was able to secure the weapon and return it to the victim. The suspect fled on foot.There are no reported injuries.

The suspect is described as an African American male, in his early 20’s, of a thin build, with a beard. He was said to be wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt,  red shirt, dark pants, and grey/orange tennis shoes.

Update to Timely Warning 12-10, April 17, 2012

The Eastern Michigan University Police Department has arrested the suspect involved in the felonious domestic assault at Westview Apartments that occurred on Tuesday, April 17, 2012.

The suspect, who is identified as the victim's husband,  turned himself into Eastern Michigan University Police Department and is currently being held at the Washtenaw County Jail, where he is awaiting arraignment. The Westview Apartments are located off Huron River Drive, adjacent to the EMU athletic campus.

Reported Crime:  Felonious Domestic Assault (Handgun Seen) – Westview Apartments

Eastern Michigan University Police are reporting and investigating a felonious domestic assault that occurred on campus at approximately 4 a.m. this morning at the Westview Apartments. The victim, who is an EMU Student, reports being held at gunpoint and threatened by a known acquaintance and being forcibly removed from her home. The suspect demanded the victim leave her home, and ride with him at gunpoint. The victim reports that she was later dropped off at her apartment on campus, where the suspect fled in a Yellow Ford Escape with a Michigan license plate of CFH3469.

Darnell Dwayne Garris is a person of interest in this investigation. Mr. Garris is not an EMU student, and is described as an African American male, dark skin complexion, 6'0", 150 lbs, black hair, and brown eyes.  Mr. Garris is believed to be headed toward Detroit.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery (Handgun Seen) – Off Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred in an alley that runs between Florence Street and Olive Street, near the southeast corner of campus at approximately 8:35 p.m. tonight.  The victim, who is an EMU Student, reports that he was approached on foot by two suspects while walking in the area.  The suspects demanded the victim's cellphone, keys, and pointed a black handgun at the victim.  The victim says he gave the suspects his cellphone and keys, and the suspects fled in an unknown direction.  The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspects as being one Caucasian male and one African American male. The Caucasian male was described as being 6'-6'1", thin build, and last seen wearing a green sweatshirt and blue jeans.  The African American male was described as average height, thin build, last seen wearing dark clothes, and was in possession of  the handgun.

Update to Timely Warning 12-07, March 23, 2012, regarding multiple shooting

The Ypsilanti Police Department has arrested Quenton Martez Dodson in connection with the multiple shooting that wounded three victims on Friday, March 23, at approximately 7:15pm in the 300 block of Jarvis Street.

The arrest, which occurred in Detroit, was a concerted effort between multiple law enforcement agencies in Washtenaw County and the State of Michigan. Dodson was arraigned on 3/29/2012 and is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail.  All three victims continue to recover from their injuries.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery (Handgun Seen) – Off Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred near Cornell Road and Roosevelt Boulevard at approximately 10:35 p.m. tonight.  The victim, who is not an EMU Student, reports that he was approached on foot by two suspects while walking in the area.  The suspects demanded the victim's money and pointed a silver handgun at the victim.  The victim says he gave the suspects his wallet, and the suspects fled south on Cornell.  The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspects as being African American males in their early to middle twenties. The first suspect was described as being 5'10", thin build, and last seen wearing a black jacket, white shirt, silver pants, and black shoes.  The second suspect was described as 5'8'' – 5'10", medium build, and was last seen wearing a black/white knit hat, black coat, black pants, and black shoes.

Shooting - Area of Jarvis and Lowell St -City of Ypsilanti (off-campus)

A shooting occurred in a parking lot, off campus, near the intersection of Jarvis St. and Lowell St.  The intersection is near the Alexander Music Building.  Three people have been shot and taken to a hospital, and none of the injuries are considered life threatening.  The suspect is described as a black male, white baggy shirt, blue jeans, red baseball cap, scraggly beard, pierced ears.  The Ypsilanti Police Department believe they have identified the suspect, but he remains at large.  None of the people involved, victims or suspect, are EMU students.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery (Weapon Seen) – Off Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred at the Domino's pizzeria in the 900 block of Cross St. at approximately 9:15 p.m. today. The victims, one of whom is identified as an EMU student, reported that the suspect entered the store, pointed a gun at them and ordered them to the back room, then demanded money. One of the victims gave the suspect money and the suspect fled Eastbound on foot. The victims, all of whom are employees of Domino's, did not report any injuries.

The victims described the suspect as being an African-American male, approximately 5'8, medium build with a thin moustache. The suspect was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and black nylon track pants, or possibly dark blue jeans.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery (Weapon Implied) – Off Campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred in a parking lot in the 200 block of Pearl Street (one block east of the College of Business) at approximately 2:30 p.m. today.  The victim is not an EMU Student and reports that he was approached by the suspect while getting into his vehicle.  The suspect was on foot at the time.  The suspect demanded the victim's money and motioned to his coat (implying that he had a weapon).  The victim gave the suspect his money and the suspect fled in a red Volvo toward the south side of Ypsilanti.  The victim did not report any injuries.

The victim described the suspect as being an African American male, approximately 6'5", and a thin build. The suspect was last seen wearing a red hat, black coat, black jeans, and had a green back pack.

This morning, the Eastern Michigan University Police Department took a report from an EMU student who said she was sexually assaulted in a vehicle parked near the Student Center at about 7:40 p.m. on October 12, 2011.

The victim said she is not able to describe the vehicle, but describes the suspect as being a black male, approximately 6'2" to 6'3" tall, with an athletic build and light to medium complexion. The suspect was described as wearing a black jacket made of cotton material with elastic sleeve cuffs, and a black knit hat with a knit ball on top and material covering the ears, with strings that hang down with tassels on the end.

The EMU Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone who might have information about this case to call (734) 487-1222 to report what they know.

Eastern Michigan University has confirmed with the Ypsilanti Police Department that the victim involved in the homicide investigation reported in the timely warning earlier today is Eastern Michigan University student Demarius Reed. He is a student athlete on the football team. As was reported earlier, the incident happened off campus in the 700 block of West Clark Rd., near the intersection of LeForge Rd. and Clark Rd. It was discovered at 7:15 this morning. Ypsilanti Police are investigating the death and are in close contact with the EMU Police Department.
