Mary Kathleen (Kathy) Walsh ’05, ’07G received a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Eastern Michigan University. Kathy spent many years as a classroom teacher, where she inspired many students. Her 20 plus years of educational experience includes elementary and university teaching, professional development for over 2000 schools, including seven reservation school districts, private schools and charter academies, and is a renowned keynote speaker at the state and national level.
Kathy founded, and is president of Extreme Teaching for Extreme Times, LLC and is teaching those who are teaching. Extreme Teaching for Extreme Times! LLC provides research-based professional development aimed at ensuring children will meet and exceed proficiencies on state standards and state assessments. Their customized services are responsive to AdvancED /School Improvement Initiatives and Compliance, NCLB, Race to the Top, and the Common Core Standards. Their mission is to assist educational leaders and visionaries in their efforts to utilize state and federal programs as interventions and change agents toward maximizing student achievement across all subgroup populations.
Kathy is the current incoming president of the Michigan Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), an organization dedicated to the improvement of teacher training and a member of the Presidential Commission on Teacher Self Efficacy, as well as several other committees for ATE. She is an avid supporter of Relentless in Detroit and Minnesota, a powerlifting organization dedicated to raising funds for families with children that have terminal illnesses, raising thousands of dollars each year for that cause.
She is a co-counselor for Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society for Educators at EMU, where she has mentored many students by providing professional development for student teachers, interviewing skills, expectations in the classroom, and participating in the students yearly trip to an Indian reservation in Arizona.
She is a member of Michigan Association for Teacher Educators, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Phi Delta Kappa (Professional Organization for Educators), Kappa Delta Pi (International Organization for Educators), and International Reading Association.
Kathy is also a parent educator, puppeteer, mime and expert in positive behavior support and student motivation. Kathy is a certified True Colors trainer. She has won many awards including, EMU’s “Extraordinary Woman of the Year” and Kappa Delta Pi International Honor’s Society for Educator’s, “Exemplary Educator Award”. She is co-author of the book, We’ve Gotta REACH EM’ to TEACH EM’ volumes 1 and 2 along with other articles and chapters.
