About this Program
To provide a high quality undergraduate and graduate level University education that ensures students have the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to succeed in management and leadership roles in the Hotel and Restaurant industry. The program strives to anticipate and address the educational needs of the Hotel and Restaurant industry and provide opportunities for ongoing professional development and networking.
Hotel and Restaurant Management Program Learning Outcomes
- Develop effective written and oral communication skills needed to be successful in the hospitality business environment.
- Apply classroom theory with practical application in the hospitality industry through targeted work experience related to career objectives.
- Analyze and apply solutions to managerial problems and implement quantitative reasoning concepts and critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrate core competencies in hotel and restaurant management that includes cost controls, food production, hotel operations, legal aspects, events management, human resource practices, restaurant operations, services marketing, strategic and management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in identifying and solving problems to meet organizational objectives.
Hotel and Restaurant Management is a comprehensive program that integrates principles of hotel and restaurant management with club, resort, meetings, and events management. The HRM program provides experiential educational opportunities in a wide variety of hospitality organizations through co-op or internships. A wide variety of minors although not required are available within the university to supplement the HRM Major.

Students who have attended other colleges and universities may transfer credits to EMU. General education, business, and culinary courses will be evaluated when transcripts are submitted. The program coordinator evaluates hotel and restaurant management courses individually unless covered by an articulation agreement. As part of the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program, students have the opportunity to participate in study abroad trips through the university. The pictures below are from a recent HRM study abroad programs.
The HRM club is a social, professional and fundraising group comprised of undergraduate and graduate students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program.
Eta Sigma Delta (International Hospitality Honor Society)
Eta Sigma Delta encompasses over 60 chapters around the U.S. with the intent to lead hospitality and tourism educators and professionals to the highest levels of professionalism and achievement. The EMU chapter is very actively involved in professional development through networking with industry professionals and charity events for Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels Organization.
Who is eligible?
An undergraduate student must have completed 50% of the credit hours required for graduation. Provided the criteria is met, the student may have at least a sophomore (2nd year) or junior (3rd year) standing. The student must be officially declared as a hospitality management major and have completed at least one complete year's course work at HRM Program. The undergraduate student must have obtained a 3.00 GPA.
Only individuals who are active student members at the time of their graduation shall attain alumni membership status. Membership is life-long.
Graduate students must have completed 50% of the credit hours required for a hospitality-related degree. The graduate student must have obtained a 3.50 GPA.
Honorary membership will be extended to individuals in the field who have made outstanding contributions to the field of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management including all Chapter Advisors and members of the Board of Governors. Nominations may be made by the individual chapter or by the Chapter Advisor. All requests for honorary memberships must be in writing and sent to the I-CHRIE headquarters office. Honorary membership will be granted by a majority vote of the Society's Board of Governors.
