About

Since November 6, 2006, The EMU Student Center has become the new vibrant hub of activity on EMU’s main campus in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In fact, in April 2007, it was voted the “Best Place to Hang Between Classes” by Eastern Echo readers. In 2017 The Student Center was chosen as the number one student union in the country by College Rank. From the wide range of eatery choices to the fireplace lounges, there’s so much more in between: EMU Bookstore, EMU Credit Union, wireless Internet access, two art galleries, meeting/conference/banquet rooms, and an auditorium for movies, live performances and guest lectures. Additionally, students will find many EMU student services, programs and organization offices all under one roof. When you view it altogether, The EMU Student Center lives up to its slogan: Centered on You!

Earth-Friendly Building Features

Built by Turner Construction Company (Detroit, MI), The Student Center spans 181,000 square feet—nearly double the size of McKenny Union, which it replaced. The building features many earth-friendly elements:

  • An energy-saving lighting system that uses motion sensors for individual rooms and offices
  • A retention pond providing more scenic and open space
  • Natural day lighting including a three-story curving glass wall facing the pond and University Park and two skylights on the third floor. Eighty percent of Student Center offices have natural day lighting.
  • Turner Construction initiated a construction waste management program on-site to divert and recycle the waste that accumulated during construction.
