Why I Chose EMU
Emily Gould: ‘I knew Eastern was home.’
“The first time I walked Eastern’s campus, I knew I was home,” says Emily Gould, a 2019 graduate with a degree in Written Communication. “EMU has a large campus with a small school vibe. There are many passionate students who work really hard and make the most of their education to reach their goals.”
Meeting new people was one of the joys Gould experienced at Eastern. So it’s no surprise she became a Certified Tour Guide with Admissions Visit Programs.
“Working in that department defined my experience at Eastern,” she says. “It was an amazing on-campus job opportunity and the experience led to making some great friendships.”
Real-world experiences
Gould, a Dayton, Ohio native who now lives in Ypsilanti and works for ProQuest—an Ann Arbor-based information content and technology company—says the Technical Communication courses she took at Eastern prepared her for the workforce more than she ever imagined.
“My professors demonstrated how to apply the concepts we learned to a real-world working environment,” Gould says. “For a class project, I worked with an Ypsilanti-based non-profit on some documentation writing. I managed the project, had deadlines to meet and produced a piece of documentation as a portfolio piece. Eastern often builds real-life experiences like this into student coursework.
“Eastern is really about maximizing the opportunities presented to you through your major and student organizations or by working on campus. If you do those things and get outside your comfort zone, it will pay off. Eastern is designed to help you grow and get where you want to go.”
