  • Names: Karl Heise '64 and Janet (Brown) Heise
  • Relationship Status: Married
  • Anniversary Date: November 27, 1963

Do you have children? How many?

3 - One boy, Erich and two girls, Karla and Wendi.

How did you meet?

Janet sat behind me in Ms. Wolfe's Survey of Spanish Literature class, Fall Semester 1962. Sometimes she would sit with one leg crossed over the other and swing her leg, tapping me on the rear end. I thought it was an invitation (she says she was totally unaware).

Where was your first date?

We went for a drive in his car and stopped for refreshments.

If married/engaged, how did they propose? If it was on campus, where?

We were driving around Ann Arbor when Karl proposed in the car.

What are the two of you doing now?

I retired June 30, 2011 after 35 years of service at Minnesota State University, Mankato, as a Professor of Spanish and Coordinator of Spanish Study Abroad. Upon graduation from EMU I was awarded an NDEA Fellowship to pursue graduate studies at Michigan State University. Janet transferred to MSU, then became a Spanish Teacher when she graduated.

Any romantic advice you would give to students:

If a prospective partner is sitting behind you and inadvertently kicks your rear end, be wary. It may never stop!
