IELTS FAQ

  • When is the speaking test?

    Expand dropdown
The speaking test will take place after the first three modules (listening, reading, writing) are complete. The first three modules typically are finished no later than 12:30 p.m. Speaking tests start at 12:40 p.m. and will continue until roughly 5 p.m., depending on the number of candidates in attendance. The speaking tests will always be on the same day as the first three modules.
  • How long does the entire test day take? Expand dropdown
All candidates will take the first three modules (listening, reading, writing) at the same time in the same room. Typically this will start at 9 a.m. and go no later than 12:30 p.m. The speaking tests take place between 12:40 p.m. and 5 p.m. We recommend you leave the entire day free, as the speaking test times are assigned at random. If you have a later speaking test time, you are free to leave campus in the meantime.
  • How long are the speaking tests? Expand dropdown
The speaking test slots are 20 minutes long. Typically the speaking test itself lasts for between 10 and 15 minutes.
  • Where should I park? Do I have to pay for parking? Expand dropdown
You will have to pay for parking on Eastern Michigan University’s Campus. We have outlined the best lots to park in at the following link: Parking For Your IELTS Test. Please arrive early enough to locate parking as well as the testing center. We recommend parking in a gated pay lot rather than metered parking.
  • When will I have bathroom access during the test? Expand dropdown
You should plan to visit the facilities prior to entering the testing room. Once you have registered for the test, you will not be able to leave the testing room until after the listening module of the test is complete. The listening portion of the test is normally finished at approximately 10 a.m. There are no exceptions to this rule. If you must leave the testing room for any purpose during this time, you will not be allowed back in and will forfeit your test fee.
  • When do I get my test scores back? Expand dropdown
You can access your scores online 13 days after your test date. Your official Test Report Form will be mailed to you via first-class USPS mail the second Friday after your test date if the test date is a Saturday. Please note that it will typically take a minimum of three days for the report form to arrive at your provided address. To minimize disruption, please ensure that you provide our test center with an accurate mailing address.
  • How do I access my test scores online? Expand dropdown
Please see our step-by-step instructions here: How to Access Your Online Results. Please remember that your online results will not be available until 13 days after your test date.
  • What can I bring into the test room? Expand dropdown
You must bring in the identification you used to sign up for the test (typically a passport). You may bring in a clear water bottle with no writing if desired. Please ensure that all stickers/labels are removed from the water bottle or you will not be allowed to bring it in.
  • What amenities are inside the test room? Expand dropdown
We will provide you with sharpened pencils and erasers (pen is not used during the IELTS exam), disposable tissues, and all papers necessary for the test. There will also be a large clock displayed on a projector screen.
  • What about special medical accommodations? Expand dropdown
If you have any special medical needs, you must notify us at the time that you are signing up for the test.
  • What are the rules for refunds? Expand dropdown
We subscribe to the official IELTS rules for refunds. You must request a refund before five weeks prior to your test date. The only exception is if you can furnish documentation of a medical emergency.
