Review details of our Financial Analytics Online

The Master of Science in Financial Analytics (MSFA) at Eastern Michigan University is a 30-credit hour, AACSB-accredited program for recent graduates and working professionals. The program is delivered in a supportive, fully online format over five consecutive 7.5-week sessions, allowing completion of the 30-hour core requirements in only 10 months.

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  • Gain expertise in corporate finance, financial reporting, fixed income, derivatives, investments, portfolio management, and equity investments.
  • Demonstrate preparedness to sit for all three levels of the CFA exams.
  • Apply practical financial skills relevant to careers in finance.

The Master of Science in Financial Analytics degree can be completed entirely online. The coursework is delivered synchronously or asynchronously, depending on the program. As part of their academic obligations, students may be required to participate in in-person clinical or internships near their residences or attend an on-campus program on one or two weekends during a semester. NOTE: It is not permissible for international students studying in the United States to pursue a fully online program.

The College of Business offers the graduate portion of the program Hyflex in a synchronous format using current technology. Thus, online students can access the same course media, materials, discussions, etc., as if in the classroom. In addition, the faculty records class meetings enabling students to revisit lectures as often as necessary while enrolled in each course.

The admission process is the first step to earning your Master's in Financial Analytics degree online. Be sure to review all admission requirements and any additional materials you should send.

Admission Requirements:

  • Earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution

    Applicants must also meet the following program requirements.

    • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 
    • Resume submitted with the application.
    • A personal statement (250-word maximum) detailing the applicant’s interest in an MSF is submitted with the application.

    Applicants may submit a GMAT or GRE score if they believe it enhances their application, but this is optional. 

    Conditional Admission Applicants with a GPA between 2.75 and 3.00 must maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher for one semester without receiving any final grades below a B-. Failure to meet these requirements will result in removal from the program. 

    Conditional admission may be available to applicants not meeting minimum admission requirements.

    • FIN 501: Quantitative Methods in Finance Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      Students will learn mathematical techniques applicable to financial analysis. Topics will include but are not limited to, partial differentiation, matrix algebra, and statistics.
    • FIN 601: Corporate Finance Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      The course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of finance and includes time value of money, bond and stock valuation and capital budgeting. Emphasis is on use of tools, such as Excel, for evaluation and risk analysis.
    • FIN 611: Financial Statement Analysis Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      This course focuses on the information obtained from financial statements, not on the preparation of financial statements. The course teaches students how to review, interpret and evaluate data in financial statements and statement footnotes from the perspective of a financial analyst.

      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      This course addresses the major issues of interest to investors and portfolio managers including the optimal allocation of wealth among assets, the valuation of risky assets and the measurement of investment performances of various financial instruments, such as common stocks, bonds, convertibles, and options.  Intended to meet the requirements of the CFA Body of Knowledge.

      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      This course introduces hands-on industry skills and equips students with the tools to create sophisticated models, analyze real-world financial data, and develop practical solutions using Excel.
    • FIN 641: Fixed Income Analysis Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      This course evaluates the fixed income market including corporate bonds, Treasuries, and municipal bonds. Topics include but are not limited to bond pricing, duration, convexity, bond options and the impact of options on risk, and are intended to meet the content of the CFA Body of Knowledge.
    • FIN 651: Portfolio Management Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      The course includes a review of the investment process and portfolio applications intended to meet the content of the CFA Body of Knowledge. Asset valuation models are taught in addition to equity, bond, and hybrid portfolio management. Course content includes a review of professional ethics as it relates to portfolio management.

      This course develops conceptual foundations for making intelligent corporate financial analysis and covers content from the CFA Body of Knowledge. Advanced concepts in modern corporate finance are examined.

      This course reviews the basic concepts, principles, and practices of derivative securities with a primary focus on options and futures contracts. The course will cover derivative markets, pricing of options and futures contracts, and financial risk management. Advanced hedging strategies and securities innovation including real options will be introduced.  The course is intended to meet the content of the CFA Body of Knowledge.

      This course intertwines the field of finance with the innovation of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Expect an exploration of theoretical foundations, hands-on applications in financial contexts, and a look into the ethical dimensions of technology in finance.
