Program Overview

The Online Master of Arts in Social Foundations and Community Education is for students with a broad range of experience and goals both within and outside of professional education, eager to explore issues pertaining to quality of life: social and ecological justice, globalization, and the ethics of teaching in schools and society.

Students in this program will learn:

  • To strengthen and deepen their commitment to education that supports participatory democracy in a pluralistic society.
  • To assess the economic, historical, social, and political forces that influence the structure and governance of education both nationally and internationally.
  • To conduct theoretical analysis of cultural diversity and its impact on educational practices and processes in a democratic society.

Available Online

The Master's in Social Foundations and Community Education degree can be completed entirely online. The coursework is delivered synchronously or asynchronously, depending on the program. As part of their academic obligations, students may be required to participate in in-person clinical or internships near their residences or attend an on-campus program on one or two weekends during a semester. NOTE: It is not permissible for international students studying in the United States to pursue a fully online program.

The admission process is the first step to earning your M.A. in Social Foundations and Community Education online. Be sure to review all admission requirements, what additional materials you should send, and where you need to send them.

Admission Requirements:

  • Earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalent degree from a non-U.S. institution
  • Minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, or 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program.

Conditional admission may be available to applicants not meeting minimum admission requirements.

Program Requirements:

  • Social Foundations Community Education M.A. Online Admission Requirements Expand dropdown
    • To meet the Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement, applicants will choose one of the following options:
      • Option 1 - Hold a 2.75 undergraduate GPA
      • Option 2 - 3.0 GPA in the last half of the undergraduate work
      • Option 3 - 3.3 GPA in 12 hours or more of work at the graduate level
      • Option 4 - A minimum 2.7 undergraduate GPA and 50th percentile on the Graduate Record Examination writing. If taken, GRE scores must be sent to GradCAS.
    • Submit a statement of interest. This statement should discuss the candidate’s interest in the SFCE program and demonstrate how it aligns with their professional goals.
    • Optional: Request and submit two letters of recommendation that address the candidate’s professional commitment, experience, and potential.

      Drawing on a variety of sources from historical narrative and historiography, the course provides a context for interpreting the conflicting aims of literacy and education in the United States.

      This course introduces various social theoretical perspectives to analyze the relation of schooling and other sites of education to the production of inequality across and between categories of race, class, gender and sexual orientation, and dis/ability.  While attention is placed on teachers’ responsibilities and skills as classroom practitioners, child advocates, and community leaders in a culturally diverse democratic society, the course also addresses how culture more generally acts as an educational force in various sites and across domains in society.
