Alexander Simpson was appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Rick Snyder in December of 2016 to fill the seat of Jim Stapleton, whose term had expired. He is appointed for a term expiring December 2024.

A proud alumnus, Simpson received his Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Eastern Michigan University in 2007. At EMU, he was a member of the Delta Nu chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., presented at the Undergraduate Symposium, was a member of the Community Creed Task Force, served as a New Student Orientation Assistant, was a writer for the Eastern Echo, helped start the Student Conflict Resolution Center and was Homecoming King. After graduation from EMU, he matriculated on and received his Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan, School of Social Work in 2008, and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University, Maurer School of Law in 2011. While in law school, he co-founded the Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality. He received his Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management in 2017.

Simpson began his legal career at Bodman PLC, a law firm that has been in Michigan since 1929. Bodman PLC provides counsel to companies and businesses. After participating in the firm’s summer associate program, he worked as an associate attorney in the firm’s Enterprise Procurement, Business, and Intellectual Property practice groups. In 2015, Simpson joined IHS Markit Ltd. as Legal Counsel and became a member of Corporate Counsel at Meijer Corporation in 2017. Simpson was previously appointed by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as a Board Member for the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. As a Board Member, Simpson was responsible for providing policy direction to MSHDA staff, authorizing bond issues, approving development loan commitments and evaluating programs. Currently, Simpson is an Attorney for Microsoft and supports commercial transactions in both the U.S. and Canada.

Simpson was President of the Wolverine Bar Association. The Wolverine Bar Association was created in the 1930s to coordinate the abilities of African American Lawyers in state of Michigan. In his spare time, Simpson coaches youth football, at Play 4 Fun Sports League, an organization that strives to provide quality sports programs, leagues, and clinics to kids. 

Regent Simpson serves as the Chair of the Audit Committee, Vice Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee and Vice Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee.
