Success Stories

Professor Lajiness-O’Neill received a $5,000 grant from the EMU Women in Philanthropy. This funding enabled her to launch her groundbreaking research aimed at predicting the risk of developmental disorders and psychopathology in infancy. After she and her team presented their research to the National Institute of Health (NIH), they secured a $4.5 million grant.

In 2017, Women in Philanthropy awarded $5,000 to Dr. Christina Mirtes, enabling her to launch the “Concept to Go” project. She created nearly 100 bags with educational resources to support early literacy and interdisciplinary teaching in the content areas (Art, English Language Arts, Music, Math, Physical Movement, Science, and Social Studies) Dr. Mirtes also mentored two students, Melanie Prince and Tammy McDaniel, who have since become successful in their respective fields.According to Dr.Mirtes WIP awards “ serve as a vehicle for progress and often become a springboard for further learning experiences, development, and progress within and across our EMU community—and beyond” showing that Women in Philanthropy grants are more than just financial awards.

Our efforts helped launched the BIKEMU project to promote sustainable transportation by installing bike stations throughout campus, encouraging a healthier, eco-friendly community.
