What is Starfish?
Starfish is a communication tool that allows you to connect with instructors, advisors, and student support staff to remove obstacles for student success.
Log into Starfish through the following 3 steps:
1. Log into my.emich.edu
2. Click Student
3. Click Starfish (at the bottom)
What are flags and kudos?
A flag is an alert raised by a faculty member to indicate a concern about a student in regards to academics or other aspects of college success. Once a flag is raised, the appropriate office or person at EMU will be notified so the student can quickly receive assistance.
Kudos are a way for faculty to provide students with positive feedback about their academic performance.
What is a progress survey?
Progress surveys keep track of student academic progress in a course throughout the semester. This allows instructors to acknowledge students who are succeeding in a course and report on students who may be struggling. Once an instructor completes a Progress Survey, the University can proactively intervene through outreach from Success Coaches, Academic Advisors, Honors staff and/or Student Athlete Support Services (SASS) staff. How do I follow up on a flag?
When you receive a Starfish flag, you will receive an email from [email protected] to inform you of your flag, the reason for the reason for the instructor’s concern, and recommendations on how to improve. It is your responsibility to reach out to your instructor to receive assistance. What is my responsibility if I receive a flag?
Students have the responsibility of responding to flags raised by instructors or advisors. This may include seeking additional information from instructors, seeking advice from academic advisors, or using other resources on campus (tutoring services, counseling offices, etc.). Is my personal information protected through Starfish?
Anything maintained electronically associated with a student’s file is considered confidential. Only staff (instructor, advisor, or administrative personnel) who have a need to see it, will be able to see it. What academic resources can help me improve in my course and prevent future flags?
There are a number of resources at EMU to assist you and we’ve included a partial list here. Your academic advisor may be able to provide you with additional resources appropriate to your situation.
