University Scholarship Application is Open
The University Scholarship Application for continuing and currently enrolled undergraduate students is now available. Please encourage your students to apply online. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020.
Coffee Talk! What is the Census & Why Should You Take It?
Please encourage your students to stop by to grab some free coffee and cookies while they learn about the census. This LBC approved event takes place on February 11th in the Student Center, Room 104. Attendees are welcome to drop-in anytime between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for information on how the census affects them and their community. Questions may be directed to Kristen Klochko. Last Call! Signature Learning Arc Dialogue
The Bringing Theory to Practice grant team invites the campus community to participate in the last in a series of three dialogues about creating a signature learning arc at EMU. The first session focused on the first year component of a signature learning experience, the second considered the middle component from sophomore to junior year, and this session will focus on an integrative capstone experience for the degree (not just the major).
Please consider joining this important conversation on February 7, 2020. Refreshments and socializing begin at 9:45 a.m. The dialogue will run from 10 a.m. to noon in room 300 of the Student Center. RSVP online today!
Call for Applications: Women’s Commission Scholarship
The Women's Commission Scholarship Application 2021 is now available. This scholarship is open to admitted undergraduate and graduate students who plan to be or are enrolled at least half-time. This is a one-time scholarship for the academic year (the award will be split evenly between fall 2020 and winter 2021 semesters). Applications are due by 5:00 pm, April 3, 2020.

Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity Showcase
The Office of Research Development and Administration is hosting the third annual faculty research showcase and strolling reception on March 19, 2020. In conjunction with the George Liepa Sigma Xi Lecture, this event celebrates faculty and their recently disseminated research, and scholarly/ creative activities. All tenured and tenure-track faculty are invited to display posters, journal articles, books, artwork, videos of performing arts, etc., that highlight scholarly/creative activities from the 2019 calendar year. Applications are due by February 7. Space is limited and places are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis, so submit your application early!
WAC Institute and Advanced WAC Retreat
We are very excited to share the calls for this year's Writing Across the Curriculum Spring Institute and the Advanced WAC Retreat This year's WAC Institute and Advanced Retreat will mark our 20th anniversary of WAC at EMU (and our nation's 50th anniversary of WAC).
The Regular Institute will be held in 301 Porter Building, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30; Friday, May 1; Monday, May 4; and Tuesday, May 5, 2020. The deadline for applying to the Regular Institute is Friday, February 21, 2020, and the application can be found here. New WAC Fellows will receive $600 for participating in the Institute, and returning Fellows will receive $400.
The Advanced Retreat this year will focus on teaching, supporting, and assessing reading and writing in online and web-enhanced classes. The Advanced Retreat is for those who have already participated in a WAC Institute. It will take place in room 300 Halle from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. The application can be found here. Again, the deadline for applying is Friday, February 21, 2020.
If you assign any writing in your classes, we encourage you to consider participating in the WAC Institute. Part- and full-time lecturers as well as tenure-track and tenured faculty are all eligible to participate. All are welcome!

Academic Service-Learning Highlight: TESOL Alumnae
Congratulations to EMU Associate Professor Zuzana Tomaš and two co-authors, former EMU TESOL graduate students, Amie Van Horn-Gabel and Silvija Marniković, on their recently published article in Teaching English as a Second Language Electronic Journal, “Examining the Value of a TESOL Service-Learning Study Abroad for U.S. Pre- and In-Service Teachers and Montenegrin Community." The article reports on the benefits of a collaborative partnership that engaged EMU's TESOL students and Montengrin EFL learners, teachers, and teaching assistants in developing, implementing, and assessing an intensive summer English institute in a small school in Montenegro. We are pleased to announce that nominations for the 2020 Distinguished Achievement Recognition Awards will be accepted from January 24 through February 9 to honor the recent achievements of our staff. The awards are divided into four categories:

The Josephine Nevins Keal Professional Development Fund Application 2021 is now available. Fellowship funds are to assist faculty women in advancement of professional competence and rank. I.T. Scanning Services Adds Off-Hours Locker Pick-up
I.T. now offers secured lockers as an option for exam pick-up outside normal Scanning Service window hours. This service, coupled with the 24-hour dropbox implemented previously, provides faculty members with the flexibility to drop-off and pick-up exams at their convenience. Lockers are located in the hallway opposite the Scanning Services window and can be accessed at any time during normal building hours. If you have questions regarding the locker pick-up service, please contact I.T. Scanning Services at i[email protected] or (734) 487-1492.
CPR and AED Training Available
Faculty and Staff are encouraged to participate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification training. Reserve your spot at an upcoming training by emailing Katherine Wilhoff, Director of Environmental Health and Safety, at [email protected].
