Move Out Information
This page contains information regarding moving out of your assigned space at the end of your 24/25 contract.
The residence halls and apartments close and your housing contract ends on Sunday, April 27 at 12 pm.
You MUST be completely moved out of your room by this timeunless:
- You have completed the summer housing application
- You are a student athlete who has been approved to stay until the end of their season
- Approved special requests for late stays
Students staying for these reasons will get additional information and written approval by email. If you do not have written approval, you must adhere to the move out deadline above.
Move Out Instructions
For Express Check-Outs:
- Once you have removed all your belongings and completed the cleaning checklist, go to your residence hall front desk.
- Find the express check out station.
- Fill out and sign the statement on the checkout envelope.
- Place your blank white electronic key card (for room entry) and any housing temp cards into the envelope.
- Return bedroom keys, mailbox key and laundry key (if applicable) by placing them into into the envelope.
- Do NOT return your photo EMU Eagle ID/EagleOne Card. You keep this.
- Place the SEALED and completed express checkout envelope in the mailbox outgoing mail drop or wall-mounted drop box by the front desk.
- Failure to complete any or all of the steps above will result in an improper check-out charge in addition to keycard charges.
- Express Check Out residents waive their right to appeal a damage charge for the room/suite.
SPECIAL NOTE: If you failed the room inspection during Winter recess and/or in March, you must complete the in-person check out process. Failure to complete this will result in an improper check out fee in addition to lost room card or damage charges. Students who are required to schedule and check-out in person will be notified in writing.
- You may schedule an in-person checkout appointment with staff to review the state of your room or apartment.
- Residents will receive an email from their Complex Director with instructions for how to sign up to do an in-person checkout between the dates of April 21 - 27.
- Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis, so you must remain flexible with your move-out availability.

For full details about the checkout process, see your Resident Advisor or front desk and attend your floor meeting April 6-12. Your room will receive a cleaning checklist that week.
Please note:
- All personal belongings and trash must be removed from the apartment and the cleaning checklist completed before checking out.
- Do NOT leave your key card or keys with a roommate or other representative. This will result in improper checkout fees.
- Students with special requests to stay beyond their contract day /time must put these in writing to [email protected] with the reason and requested check out. Late stay charges will be incurred if approved. These requests must be submitted by April 14.
- Parking: your friends and family helping you move will need to pay for parking (either as a visitor or at a meter).
- CORNELL Only: If you had an AC unit installed by the maintenance, please make sure you place a work order to have it removed. Anyone leaving an AC in their window will be billed for removal if you are not continuing your occupancy.
Billing and Damages
- Cleaning and damage charges will be added to your student account in May.
- You will have until Monday, June 16 to contest your bill in writing.
- Students who do express check-outs waive the right to contest cleaning and damage charges for the room/suite.
Your Mail and Packages
- Please check your mailbox, package boxes, and front desk for any packages and mail before moving out.
- Housing and Residence Life does not forward mail.
- You must change your mailing address via USPS for mail to be forwarded to your home address over the summer.
- Update your addresses with all your memberships, subscriptions, or services–only USPS forwards mail and packages. Amazon packages that are undeliverable are destroyed. All other providers (Fed Ex, UPS, DHL) will only return to sender.

The Housing and Dining Services Contract is a legally binding agreement. Once a student takes occupancy, they are held to the terms and conditions of their contract(s). All students were emailed a copy of the contract when they filled out the contract within the housing application and were encouraged to download and save a copy for their records.
