Become an Outreach Trainer
Through its national network of OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers, qualified individuals can become authorized OSHA Outreach trainers. Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainers deliver 10- and 30-hour outreach classes to workers in construction, general industry, maritime, and 15-hour classes for disaster site workers. To become an Authorized Outreach Trainer, interested individuals must meet industry safety experience requirements and complete a training course in the applicable OSHA standards and a trainer course to become authorized. Trainers must attend an update course every four years.
How to Become an Outreach Trainer
Step 1: Gain Experience
Prospective outreach trainers must have five years of occupational safety and health experience in either construction or general industry. CSP designation, CIH designation or a college degree in Occupation Safety and Health may be substituted for two years of experience.
Step 2: Complete the Prerequisite Course
- Construction prerequisite course: OSHA #510
- General Industry prerequisite course: OSHA #511
Step 3: Apply for the Trainer Course
Submit documentation of your industry experience through our application process. Once your form is submitted, please allow 15 to 30 days for processing. Your prerequisite verification form must be approved prior to the first day of class.
Step 4: Complete the Trainer Course
- Construction trainer course: OSHA #500
- General Industry trainer course: OSHA #501

Outreach Trainers authorized through the Great Lakes OSHA Education Center can update their trainer profiles, submit Outreach Training Program Reports (OTPRs) and request replacement cards from Great Lakes OSHA.
