Department Scholarships

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology Endowed Scholarship

This award is given annually to our best and deserving undergraduate sociology, anthropology or criminology students. The students are selected by the department's faculty. The recipient also agrees that EMU may use his or her name in publications or press releases related to the grant related event or the scholarship.

Award amount: approximately $200 applied towards student tuition

Notification: Recipients will be notified by the end of March each academic year.

Sociology Scholarships

The Patrick C. Easto Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed in the memory of past department member and department head Patrick C Easto. This award is given annually to a sociology major who has been honorably discharged from service in the US armed forces. The student is selected by the program faculty in cooperation with the university's Military and Veterans Resource Center. The recipient also agrees that EMU may use his or her name in publications or press releases related to the grant related event or the scholarship.

Award amount: approximately $200 applied towards student tuition

Notification: Recipients will be notified by the end of March each academic year.

Criminology Scholarships

The Marilyn Horace-Moore Scholarship

This scholarship is created in the name of Marilyn Horace-Moore, who was a vital member of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology, at Eastern Michigan University. This award is given annually to a Criminology major selected by the program faculty. Preference will be given to applicants who articulate in their essay how the Scholarship will enable the recipient to pursue a career in law enforcement (but applicants considering other careers in criminal justice are also eligible) and will address a specific financial need, such as completing coursework during the Fall term immediately following the Scholarship award. The recipient also agrees that EMU may use his or her name in publications or press releases related to the grant related event or the scholarship.

Award amount: $400 applied towards student tuition

Application deadline: March 15

Eligibility:

  • Be a registered student who has declared their major in Criminology and Criminal Justice (CRM)
  • Intend to register for the Fall term following receipt of the award; and
  • Have achieved a minimum of 60 credit hours (with no maximum) at the time of scholarship application.

Application requirements:

  • Application form;
  • EMU transcript; and
  • A 2-4 page essay (double-spaced, 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins) explaining how the Scholarship will enable the applicant to (1) pursue a career in law enforcement or related criminal justice field; (2) how the award will address a specific financial need, such as completing coursework during the Fall term immediately following the Scholarship award.

The Marilyn of Monroe Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed in the name of Marilyn Appner-Falor, a longtime supporter of the department and its criminology program. This award is given annually to an excellent Criminology major selected by the program faculty. The recipient also agrees that EMU may use his or her name in publications or press releases related to the grant related event or the scholarship.

Award amount: approximately $200 applied towards student tuition

Notification: Recipients will be notified by the end of March each academic year. 

Eligibility:

The Greg O'Dell Endowed Criminal Justice Student Scholarship

This scholarship is endowed in memory of the late EMU Police Chief Greg O'Dell who cared a lot both about education and the department's students.This award is given annually toan excellent Criminology major. Students must apply for the scholarship and the recipient is selected by the program faculty in cooperation with the university committee working with this scholarship. The recipient also agrees that EMU may use his or her name in publications or press releases related to the grant related event or the scholarship.

Award amount: approximately $3,000 applied towards student tuition

Application deadline: early March (see scholarship announcement for specific date)

Eligibility:

  • Be a full time registered student (minimum 12 hours), majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice (CRM);
  • GPA of 3.0 or above;
  • In Junior standing (56-84 credit hours) when applying for the scholarship, with at least half of her/his credits from EMU.  Maximum transfer credits allowed will be 40; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service, informed by education in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Application requirements:

  • Application form;
  • Transcript; and
  • Personal/Professional Statement not to exceed 3 double-spaced pages, in which you reflect on your background, community service experience (including membership in organizations & any leadership positions) and your personal & professional goals going forward. Take special care to emphasize how your education in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Eastern Michigan University has informed and inspired your commitment to community service
