In a small North Carolina town in the 1960’s, young Cephus Miles is living on the farm inherited from his grandfather and uncle. He is content with the quiet farm life until faced with heartbreak as his sweetheart leaves him just as the Vietnam war begins. Due to his church teachings he does not join the Army and instead is imprisoned as a conscientious objector, who soon realizes life will never be the same. Once released, he moves north to start over in a big city that tempts him with the sweet taste of possibility. Trying too much, too soon, his dreams quickly sour and he must again regroup. Determined to persist, he eventually returns south in an attempt to rekindle his love and reclaim his land. Despite all the hardship and strife thrown his way, Cephus never gives up in this coming of age journey through love, loss, and the challenges of life.
