Canvas Instructor Training
There are a number of ways to get up to speed with the Canvas system. We encourage you to first attend a group training session to get acclimated to the basic functionality of the system; we also provide one-on-one training sessions by appointment.
The Center for E-Learning provides one-on-one Canvas training by appointment; please email us at [email protected] to schedule a training session with an instructional designer.
The Center for E-Learning regularly runs group training sessions and workshops year-round. All of these sessions can be attended remotely via GoToWebinar or in-person at the room specified, and all of these sessions will be recorded so that you can watch them later if you miss them or would like to revisit the material covered.
- Introduction to Canvas
This is a one-hour guided tour to the system, giving you quick-start skills to begin using Canvas. You'll learn how to log-in, customize your account, and navigate course tools. We'll point out great new features that will help you communicate better with students and teach more efficiently. CFE staff will be available in a computer lab after the session to answer your questions about migration, setup and running your course.
- Building Your Canvas Course
This two-hour lab session will give you hands-on experience with creating standard tools in your Canvas course. You'll build course content through the module view and functional menus, including webpages, assignments, discussions and quizzes.
- Gradebook and Grading in Canvas
Canvas has powerful tools to help you spend more time providing feedback to students and less time clicking around to get your grading done. Learn how you can use the SpeedGrader tool to quickly enter in-line comments on students papers, assign points with a clickable rubric tool, and even leave video comments on assignments. We'll also cover gradebook set-up for Assignments/Discussions, and how to add custom columns, drop scores and use weighted scoring.
- The Canvas Quiz Tool
Join us for a one-hour overview of Canvas' assessment capabilities. We'll go over the Quiz tool, used to deliver online quizzes and exams in the system, and discuss the services we provide to load your pre-built Microsoft Word and publisher test banks so that you don't have to key in every question yourself. You'll get the chance to ask us questions about exam settings and explore some of the more advanced functionality of the Quiz tool.
- Polishing Your Diamond
We will help you with course design rubrics and e-learning best practices to select some proven techniques to make your content even easier to navigate in Canvas. Just a few minor changes can yield major results!
- Canvas Accessibility 101
Join us as we talk about how Accessibility and Canvas can help you make sure that every student can access your content in your course. We will show the tools built into Canvas and the tools we have included to make this easier for you.
- Web Conferencing and Adobe Connect in Canvas
Our Canvas system utilizes the Adobe Connect webinar engine to host real-time class meetings. Connect provides all the same tools we enjoyed in Elluminate and more. You can share your desktop, send students to breakout rooms, and easily control roles and communication with participants.
