Program Overview
Eastern Michigan University (EMU) programs that educate teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) are committed to preparing individuals to teach English in a variety of local and international settings. Programs are accredited. Curriculum highlights:
- Courses in language learning, methods, materials, assessment and culture
- On-site with some online courses
- Tutoring and practicum opportunities in the ESL program at EMU

Fellows Program for Master's Students
Peace Corps Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program
Eligibility Returned Peace Corps volunteers can apply for the Fellowship by including a request to be considered in the personal statement of their MA-TESOL application, and in an application for a Graduate Assistantship. Applicants accepted into the MA-TESOL program who are also eligible for a Graduate Assistantship will be considered for the Coverdell Fellows program on a competitive basis.
The number of Fellowships will differ by year, up to 10 in any given semester, depending on the number of Graduate Assistant positions are available at the time of application.
Benefits Coverdell Fellows receive program-specific advising and support and a half-graduate assistantship (10 hours per week) each semester they continue in the program.
Requirements Coverdell Fellows must remain in good standing (GPA 3.0+), attend regular meetings, provide support for local Peace Corps recruiters and complete a structured internship teaching ESL in local non-profit organizations (10 hours per week). Accepted Coverdell Fellows who do not continue to meet the requirements will lose their benefits, but may continue in the MA-TESOL program.
