The EMU School of Social Work has roots that go back to 1968, when the first faculty member with an MSW joined the Sociology Department, and began teaching pre-social work courses. By the mid-1970s, EMU became one of the first Universities nationwide to offer an accredited BSW degree. As the BSW grew and thrived in the 1980s, social work faculty members under the leadership of Dr. Don Loppnow initiated an effort to create an accredited MSW degree to meet the needs of students already employed in the human services. These experienced human service workers sought an opportunity to undertake graduate study on part-time basis while continuing to work. In the 1992-1993 academic year, EMU launched its MSW program, aimed at students already employed in human services and providing coursework exclusively on evenings and weekends.
To date, EMU has conferred 1,552 MSW degrees. MSW alums exit the program as experienced professionals. EMU MSW-prepared practitioners serve as leaders throughout the region—in services to children, youth and families, in substance abuse and mental health service, in criminal and juvenile justice work, and in services to the aging and health care practice. EMU graduates are known for their commitment to service to those in greatest need, their level of practice competency and their groundbreaking community work.
The School of Social Work is very proud of its alums who serve across the region. EMU has relationships with several hundred agencies in the regions, many that have roots extending back to the program’s early years. The School of Social Work is planning a celebration to mark the 25th year of the MSW degree program. Faculty, staff and alumni from over the years will gather on Friday, April 13, 5:30-8:00 in the Marshall atrium for a reunion to tell stories of the School and to celebrate the contributions its graduates have made in the community. A light-hearted mixer with non-alcoholic drinks and hors d’oevres will bring the School community together and serve as an opportunity to strengthen the network and connectedness. The event will also raise funds for the Social Work Development Fund, which provides the margin that makes the School’s mission possible.
