About the Mentorship, Access, and Guidance in College - MAGIC

MAGIC stands for Mentorship, Access, and Guidance in College

MAGIC serves students who have experienced or are currently experiencing foster care. MAGIC exists to increase the graduation rates among this population of students by removing barriers that interfere with academic success and the process of becoming an interdependent adult.

Mentorship, Access, and Guidance in College (MAGIC)

Are you a youth experiencing foster care and interested in college? Are you looking for a school that offers support services for youth like yourself? Are you an EMU student and alumni of foster care? Come join us at the MAGIC office— A real place that offers real support so that you can be your best and most successful self!

Through MAGIC, students have access to support and opportunities for leadership, engagement and networking experiences. Students also receive resources needed to develop skills applicable to campus and community life, in the form of workshops, professional mental health counseling, pantry access, housing support, group outings, navigating campus resources, and other developmental programs.

We work to provide outtreach support, advocacy, awareness, and training on how best to support students who have experienced foster care.  We believe this understanding is something that all professionals should be well-versed in.

Our MAGIC staff members are experts when it comes to supporting students who have experienced foster care and would love the opportunity to help educate others.

MAGIC representatives are available for professional speaking engagements, tabling events, student/staff panels, and presentations on a variety of topics including but not limited to:

  • Authentic student engagement
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Campus based support program development
  • Cultural competency vs. cultural humility
  • The impact of foster care on students
  • The impact of trauma on student achievement
  • An introduction to resources available to alumni of foster care
