Flute Study at EMU
Private flute instruction with Dr. Julie Stone and Dr. Penelope Fischer
All flute majors (including Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy, and BA or BS) receive a weekly 1-hour private lesson. In addition to a private lesson, flute students meet weekly for Flute Studio Class where students learn orchestral excerpts, discuss flute-related topics, and perform for other members of the flute studio.
Perform with the active EMU Emerald Flute Choir and Flute Ensembles
The Emerald Flutes were selected to perform at the National Flute Association Conventions in 2000 and 2014 where it premiered pieces by highly- acclaimed composer Christopher Caliendo. The Emerald Flutes present concerts each semester on campus and performs a wide array of music from medieval to contemporary to jazz.
EMU Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band
Available through audition, undergraduate as well as graduate students have the opportunity to perform challenging repertoire.
Performing and competition opportunities
EMU William Stewart Competition, the Concerto/Aria Competition, the Chamber Music Competition, the Manilow Performance Competition, and Student Recitals.
Chamber music
In addition to Flute Ensembles, many flutists perform in woodwind quintets, flute and guitar duets, flute and harp duets, and other chamber music with strings, winds, and percussion. These groups are frequently coached by the Eastern Winds (EMU faculty wind quintet) and other EMU faculty.
Hear world-famous musicians and master classes
Available at EMU and surrounding areas such as Detroit, Toledo, and the University of Michigan Musical Society. Recent activities include a James Galway concert, Detroit Symphony Concerts, and master classes with English flutist William Bennett.
EMU Faculty Performances
The Eastern Winds and other faculty artists present solo and chamber music concerts throughout the year.
Exposure to other flutists
Dr. Stone and Dr. Fischer regularly invites guest artists to campus for recitals, lectures, and master classes. Guests have included Christina Jennings, Concert Artists Guild Winner and Professor of Flute at the University of Colorado, Marianne Gedigian, Professor of Flute at the University of Texas at Austin, Rhonda Larson, international recording artist, Wendy Mehne, Professor of Flute at Ithaca College, jazz flutist Ali Ryerson, and Jeff Zook of the Detroit Symphony.
National and Regional competitions and activities
Flutists at EMU are encouraged to enter competitions and apply for outside activities. Activities include:

- Regina Nicholas - National Scholarship Competition Winner, National Association of Negro Musicians
- Kristine Reaume - College Band Directors National Association Band; went on to receive masters degree at the University of Texas at Austin
- Carrie Wiesinger - Principal Flutist, Detroit Civic Orchestra; Cincinnati Flute Symposium; Lake Placid Flute Institute; Concerto Winner; went on to receive masters degree at Manhattan School of Music and is currently performing with the Hollywood Concert Orchestra and Saginaw Symphony

Music Now Festival
This biennial festival celebrating new music brings a major composer to EMU for a 3 day residency. Guests include Michael Daugherty, Libby Larsen, John Corigliano, Joan Tower, and Peter Schickele.
EMU Undergraduate Honors Symposium
Undergraduates compete to represent the School of Music and Dance at the University-wide symposium held each March.
EMU Honors Program
Students may participate in the advanced course offerings of the Honors Program and can even create contracts with the program to present recitals for credit.
Most classes are taught by faculty rather than graduate teaching assistants.
