The Physics and Astronomy Department hosts trips to the FLEEC at Fish Lake near Lapeer, Mich. where the department maintains several telescopes including a computerized goto Celestron 14-inch and other Newtonian instruments. Fish Lake is tucked away in a dark sky location making it an ideal place for viewing astronomical objects. Norbert Vance organizes class trips once per semester and gives students the opportunity to see objects that are not accessible from the city.
Several nights of observation through these telescopes, or additional or larger ones brought in along with other student attendees such as the Great Lakes Star Gaze group, Delta College, and UofM, makes for a wonderful field experience. Hikes along Fish Lake's many natural trails, rocket launches, camp fires, and hours under a clear night sky give students an experience that encompasses a range of sciences in one trip! Interact with students from various schools, see things above guided by those that have years of experience and knowledge about the nature of our universe using instruments that magnify the beautiful details in star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and the planets.
