Need Continuing Education hours?

We have you covered. The EMU School of Social Work's continuing education seminars offer courses and workshops to help practicing social workers expand their knowledge and meet state requirements (45 hours every three years) for continuing education.

Continuing education courses cannot be applied toward the social work undergraduate (BSW) or graduate (MSW) degree programs at Eastern Michigan University.

A Few Things to Know About CEs

According to R338.2945 (for licensed bachelor’s social worker) and R338.2955 (for licensed master’s social worker), 45 hours of continuing education courses must be completed. Of those 45 hours, 5 hours must be in social work ethics, 2 hours must be in pain and symptom management, and 2 hours must be in human trafficking.

According to R338.2963 “one half of the required continuing education contact hours must be completed in person using live, synchronous contact”. This includes in-person events and synchronous online events. R338.2963 lists the acceptable formats for the other half of the hours, which includes asynchronous online.

Additionally, beginning June 1, 2022 all licensure renewals are required to complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle. This means for 3-year social work licenses, 3 hours of implicit bias training is required. This requirement is separate from any continuing education requirements. (see R338.7004)
