About Psychology

Letter from the Department Head, Carol Freedman-Doan

Hello, and welcome to the website of Eastern Michigan University's Psychology Department. The Psychology Department has 21 fulltime, tenure-track faculty and 3 fulltime lecturers, along with 3 department secretaries. The department offers an undergraduate major (32 credit hours) and minor (20 credit hours) in psychology, a minor in Human Sexuality (21 credit hours), three masters programs (Experimental, General Clinical, Clinical Behavioral), and a PhD (doctoral) program in Clinical Psychology. The Department of Psychology is located on the third floor of the Mark Jefferson Science Complex, along with Chemistry and Biology.

The psychology major is the second most popular major at EMU with over 900 declared majors (Elementary Education is the most popular). The undergraduate major prepares students to work in healthcare settings as aides or assistants, in human resource departments, and in outpatient daycare and group home settings. In addition, the major prepares students to apply for graduate degrees in a variety of areas of psychology. The department offers undergraduates the opportunity to participate in research, both as a participant and as a research assistant. Many of our undergraduate students have presented their work at national and regional conferences, as well as EMU's annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. We also encourage our undergraduates to become involved in the Psychology Club for information about opportunities in the field of psychology and how to get into graduate programs. If your psychology GPA is high enough after completing 9 credits in psychology, you will be invited to join PSY CHI, an honors organization for psychology majors.
