About Us

EMU’s Office of Study Abroad offers a variety of programs including semester/year programs and intensive languages. EMU faculty-led programs are offered over winter break, intersession and summer. Students may apply all financial aid and scholarships (unless restricted) to official EMU programs. Many programs are open to students from any university.

Mission Statement

Academic Programs Abroad is the Study Abroad Office and a division of the Center for Global Engagement at Eastern Michigan University. We are committed to providing diverse global learning opportunities that encourage intellectual growth and intercultural development through experiential learning, exposure to new perspectives, meaningful encounters with difference and self-reflection. We develop and administer programs with EMU academic units and faculty as well as with partners across the globe, ensuring a high standard of safety and accessibility.


Paul Chao, Ph. D.

Paul served as a Fulbright Scholar to Sun Yat-sen University, China, fall 2004 and a member of review panel to select Fulbright Scholars to China, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan in 2006 and 2007. He has had extensive international teaching experiences in various universities overseas including Austria, Denmark, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He has published extensively in peer reviewed International Marketing and International Business related journals as well as presentations in numerous International conferences. He is on the editorial review boards of several prestigious international journals.

Benita Goldman

Senior Program Manager, Study Abroad | bgoldman@emich.edu

Benita directs programs, teaches abroad and coordinates faculty-led programs. She has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand as well as Mexico. She has been teaching abroad since ‘92. Benita previously served as a faculty member in the Art Department at Missouri Southern in Joplin. She holds the terminal degree in painting from EMU and studied drawing and color theory at Yale University. She has been the recipient of two Michigan Arts Council Grants, an Atlantic Center for the Arts Fellowship, a number of art awards and a scholarship from Yale University.

Eleonora Bagatelia

Manager, Study Abroad | ebagateli@emich.edu

Eleonora advises students on study abroad programs and manages the partner and exchange programs, as well as intensive language programs. She has lived in Russia and Ireland, and has done research in and traveled to many places around the world. Eleonora holds an MSW degree from the University of Michigan, as well as graduate and undergraduate degrees from Eastern Michigan University. She has substantial experience in academic and international student advising and is passionate about helping EMU students find their way to the right study abroad experience.
