It’s been an incredible season of growth for the College of Health & Human Services at Eastern Michigan University, and we could not have done any of this without the help of our incredibly generous community of alumni and donors! Between the dramatic Rackam Hall updates, Swoop’s Student Pantry, and over $75,000 in scholarships awarded to students, the donations we received have helped accomplish amazing things and improve the lives of so many people.
Another area of growth that we are proud to announce is the addition of four new programs within the College of Health & Human Services!
This program is designed to meet the growing needs of older adults in the primary care setting. Nurses who study in this program will be able to provide a full range of health care services including ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests; diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and injuries; prescribing medications and other treatments; managing patients’ overall care as well as educating patients on disease prevention and positive health and lifestyle choices. In order to apply for this program, applicants must already possess a BSN degree, be prepared for many clinical hours of education and demonstrate a desire to positively impact patients in maintaining their quality of health and life.
We developed this program in an effort to build on EMU’s distinguished reputation in quality education. Nurses who study in this program will be rigorously trained to become highly effective clinical instructors or nursing educators in community colleges or health care agencies. It’s a well rounded program that includes advanced health assessment, pharmacology, pathophysiology, health promotion, one advanced clinical course, as well as additional education courses. Like all MSN programs, applicants must already possess a BSN degree and be ready to impact the learning of undergraduate students.
This exciting new undergraduate program comes out of our School of Health Sciences! The Public Health Major is perfect for students who are interested in health related professions but not necessarily a medical degree and was created as a response to the anticipated 21% increase in demand for public health professionals as projected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Students who are looking to protect the health and well-being of their communities, promote wellness, and prevent injuries and disease outbreaks will feel right at home in this program and can look forward to possessing highly marketable skill set in an in-demand job market!
EMU Physical Education Program is pleased to introduce a new major with a focus on creating future fitness professionals who can be fluid with the changing and evolving trends of the fitness industry. The Sport Performance and Fitness Entrepreneurship (SPFE) major includes standard movement science theory courses, but is unique in that it has a prominent focus on physical activity and fitness industry-leading practical methods. The SPFE major also includes a capstone full-time internship where students are fully immersed in a fitness or sport training setting, working under a local mentor in the field. Students are able to start work during or immediately after their degree completion in recreation and fitness centers, sport performance training gyms, boutique fitness studios, and as strength and conditioning coaches or personal trainers. The amount of experience, networking, and innovation they are able to practice as an SPFE major helps them make their passion for fitness and sport into a career they love.
We’d like to take a second to again thank each and every one of our alumni and donors who have contributed to the ongoing success of the College of Health and Human Services. Your gifts are going a long way in helping us develop new academic programs, create better study environments, fund scholarships and ultimately transform the lives of tomorrow’s health and human service professionals. If you are interested in helping the College of Health & Human Services as we continue to grow, please donate!
