Honors College Welcome Week(s) Activities

Welcome to EMU and The Honors College! We are excited to welcome you to our wonderful community! This site can be used to inform new first-year students about the line-up of events the Honors College has planned for new Honors students, including Honors Kickstart, the annual Common Book Reading discussion, and the Honors Parents' Welcome. The most important of these events is Honors Kickstart, as new Honors students must attend a Kickstart session to become a full-fledged member of the Honors College.

Honors Welcome Week(s) are filled with great opportunities to meet other Honors students, get to know more about the Honors College better and engage in intellectual conversation! This year's Welcome Week(s) have been adapted into a two week, hybrid model spread out from Saturday, August 28 to September 10. We invite you to dive in and start taking advantage of everything that EMU and the Honors College has to offer.

We invite parents and other family members of incoming Honors students to join us for a special welcome session during EMU Connect. This session is designed to answer parents' and guardians' questions about the Honors College and help them learn how they can best support their student. Although Honors students may attend, this session is designed for parents, as students will receive similar information at their Kickstart session.

Common Book Reading Discussion - Friday, September 3, 2021

  • Time: 2:00pm-3:30pm
  • Facilitator: Dr. John Staunton
  • Zoom Link

Each year, the incoming cohort of Honors students reads the same book and comes together to discuss the book at the start of classes.  This year, the Honors Common Read is also the statewide selection for the 2021-2022 Great Michigan Read: The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell.  The Honors College is proud to be a Community Partner for the year-long Great Michigan Read program.  The book is readily available in local public libraries and bookstores. We selected this book, which offers a compelling fictionalized account of Annie Clements--”America’s Joan of Arc”--and her fight to improve the lives of the workers and families in her community. To work in concert with our theme for the year, Think Globally, Act Locally. Many of our programs throughout the year, including the Star Lecture Series, will address this theme and invite students to consider how they can make an impact in their local communities to shape their global futures during their time at Eastern and beyond.
