EMU Psychology Department DEI Action Plan

As of Fall 2021, the Psychology Department established a standing committee to assess, advise, and report upon the successes and challenges related to the Department’s efforts to achieve our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals. The committee:

  1. Coordinates with relevant student groups (e.g., Psy O.C., Psi Chi, the Psychology Club) and leaders to ensure a collaborative process and to maximize the quality of its results.
  2. Conducts an annual DEI climate survey and produces:
    • a yearly summary report
    • actionable items
  3. Supports regular DEI educational programming that addresses how these issues are relevant to the discipline of psychology.
    • The DEI committee sponsors or coordinates at least one DEI focused program for faculty addressing these topics each year, and encourages faculty participation in other DEI related activities.
    • The committee suggests all invited speakers hosted by the Psychology Department to include aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns in their presentations, and encourages faculty in attendance at such events to pose relevant questions related to DEI concerns.
  4. Develops awards and/or scholarships that clearly support our commitment to positive growth in these areas.
  5. Monitors and works to improve recruitment, retention, and mentoring of marginalized students, as well as the Department’s efforts to recruit and retain faculty from diverse backgrounds.
    • e.g., consults IRIM to pull relevant student information for the Department, track relevant data on the retention and recruitment of diverse faculty, etc.
    • e.g., tracks mentoring contact events for students (e.g., encourage faculty to meet with each student in the program at least once a year for the first two years they are in the psychology program).
  6. Assesses and reviews the Department’s efforts to infuse diversity-related perspectives and information across the curriculum.
