In Memoriam

Professor Emeritus Dale Rice, age 79, died February 15, 2011. He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Michigan, and began teaching as an adjunct professor in the Department of Special Education at Eastern Michigan University in 1967. He was promoted to full professor in 1975. Dale was instrumental in obtaining multiple grants for EMU, one of which funded the Office of Academic Service-Learning. He served as its director from 1994 to 2002. A private graveside memorial service was held February 19 at Alban Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to University of Michigan, C.S. Thomas Fleming, a former special assistant to Eastern Michigan University's provost and 2001 College of Education Hall of Fame inductee, died Nov. 4. He was 77. In September 1991, Fleming was named Michigan Teacher of the Year while working as a secondary special education teacher in the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. His career, devoted to the education of incarcerated youth, brought him national recognition as a Milken Scholar and as the National Teacher of the Year Award winner in 1992. For the latter effort, Fleming was presented the Golden Apple Award from then-president George H. Bush in a White House ceremony.
