Brigid Beaubien (Associate Professor, Teacher Education) and John. M. Palladino (Associate Professor, Special Education) were honored at the 22nd Annual Teaching Excellence Awards ceremony held on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Brigid and John were among seven total EMU faculty selected by alumni and students for their outstanding dedication in the classroom. The Teaching Excellence Awards ceremony is an opportunity to honor faculty for the way they have represented educational quality at EMU and for going above and beyond to help their students succeed.
Dibya Choudhuri (Professor, Leadership and Counseling) was recently elected Chair-Elect of the National Board of Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates (NBCC). NBCC is an independent not-for-profit credentialing body for counselors established to monitor a national certification system. NBCC has more than 48,000 certified counselors who live and work in the U.S. and more than 40 countries. The organization will provide support for Dr. Choudhuri’s travel throughout the U.S., to Argentina, India, South Africa, Malwai, Portugal, Frankfort, Argentina, and Venezuela this year.
Paul (Joe) Ramsey (Assistant Professor, Teacher Education), assistant professor of Social Foundations, recently published his second book, The Bilingual School in the United States: A Documentary History (Information Age Publishing, 2012). Serhiy Kovalchuk, Huayun Xu, Cassandra Turner, W. Samino Scott II, and Julie Coston—current and former COE students—helped collect historical documents for the text, and John Field, a current SOFD student helped index the work. Brenda Gonzalez, also a current SOFD student, contributed an original essay to the project.
Ethan Lowenstein (Professor, Teacher Education) has been highlighted in the "People" section of Michigan Nightlight. Lowenstein, director of the Southeast Michigan Stewardship Coalition (SEMIS) in Ypsilanti, Michigan believes that future environmental stewards first need to understand cultural attitudes toward nature. Once understood, kids can build appreciation and respect for the environment – and learn how to take personal and community responsibility for the ecosystem where we all live. Read the article.
Eboni Zamani-Gallaher (Professor, Leadership and Counseling) was the keynote speaker and Raúl León (Assistant Professor, Leadership and Counseling) presented at the 2012 Annual Michigan College Personnel Association (MCPA) conference hosted in Detroit, Michigan. The theme of the annual conference was "Working Together: Revitalizing Higher Education in Michigan." The conference served as a venue for students, faculty, and staff from a number of institutions in our state to discuss relevant and timely issues for college student educators. Dr. León presented on, "Males of color and study abroad."
Sarah Ginsberg (Associate Professor, Special Education) is the editor of the new Pearson Publishing journal "EBE Briefs: Evidence-Based Education." This journal will be the first ever, peer-reviewed journal to focus on publishing national and international scholarship of teaching and learning research in communication sciences and disorders. This journal will be published electronically and will be available online at Pearson's site on November 12, 2012.
Joe Bishop (Professor, Teacher Education) has been appointed to serve a two-year term on the board of One School at a Time (a non-profit working with Ugandan Schools) as well as the editorial board of Педагогічні науки (Pedagogical Studies) an education journal published by Sumy State Pedagogical University in Sumy, Ukraine.
In 2002, Toni Stokes Jones (Professor, Teacher Education) and Timothy Spannaus (Wayne State University) co-authored a case study in the ID CaseBook: Case Studies in Instructional Design. The fourth edition has gone to press and their (updated) chapter/case study remains part of the
book and instructor's guide.
PowerPlay: A Journal of Educational Justice has published Volume 4, Issue 2. This issue features an article on The Educational Debt of Critical Science in "Revolting" Times: Documenting Circuits of Dispossession and Capillaries of Desire by Michelle Fine, a Distinguished Professor of Social Psychology, Women's Studies and Urban Education at the Graduate Center, The City University of New York. PowerPlay is a interdisciplinary, online journal with a commitment to urban education, social justice, and the analysis of broad social, political, economic, cultural, and global impacts on education in the U.S. and international contexts.
